My traditional Easter reading, from James Tate.
Jesus got up one day a little later than usual. He had been dreaming so deep there was nothing left in his head. What was it? A nightmare, dead bodies walking all around him, eyes rolled back, skin falling off. But he wasn't afraid of that. It was a beautiful day. How 'bout some coffee? Don't mind if I do. Take a little ride on my donkey, I love that donkey.
Hell, I love everybody.

"Back before anyone had cell phones, we’d drive with the windows down, shouting to other kids as we passed, pulling up to packs of cars idling at the Cenex, trying to find something—anything—to do. Something—anything—to be, other than what we were." I love this essay and its very 90s sadness.

It's the music essay version of March Madness! And speaking to the 2nd match here - while I'm a Kate Bush lover first-last-always, @kjmoulton.bsky.social's deeply personal Hootie essay deserves your vote, and you the bittersweet reading experience. (On the other, obvs, je dois être Équipe Céline.)

"Let Her Cry" on the other hand—& as @kjmoulton.bsky.social's @marchxness.bsky.social essay mentions—started small-scale & personal & became something you hear all the time at CVS. It clearly has pop ambitions, so it gets its damn message across. Bush's erwachsenetotenlied is great! But Hootie wins.
