After reading the article: headline and lede are far more provocative than the article itself. The writer came to Taiwan in April at the peak of Cheng Li-wun's "para-diplomatic" efforts. It shows. A lot can change in 5 months. Pandering to China remains a losing strategy for politicians in Taiwan.

For those of you who might wonder, USS Midway, now a fabulous museum in San Diego, holds the record for the longest deployment by a carrier at 332 days in 1972-73 off Vietnam. Still, Midway split her deployment into 4-5 week line periods bookended by (gasp! clutch pearls!) periods of liberty ashore.
