Jennifer Nelson’s entry to this year’s Minnesota State Fair crop art
A localized version of Guernica with a loon at the center and a person holding an ICE OUT sign

“My piece was inspired by Picasso's Guernica, a work that was his response to the Nazi's bombing of the Basque town. I thought there was a fitting parallel between these incidents about the high price paid by ordinary people when aggressive regimes try out new tactics of war, as well as a fitting juxtaposition of the darkness of living such an experience and the light we shone through it in our own resistance and care for one another. The patterns near Renee Good and Alex Pretti’s mouths are actually their last words in Morse code: ‘I’m not mad at you,’ and ‘Are you okay?’”

Dig detritus can be fascinating. On occasion, I helped re-catalog artifacts from the 1960s Mellaart excavations at Çatalhöyük. The range of re-purposed bits of paper used as labels, business cards, cigarette packets, gave me double vision, a simultaneous glimpse of the Neolithic and the 1960s. 🏺

I recently discovered Stubbs, while very good at painting horses, was not as good at painting other animals. Admittedly, he only had a description and the skin of the kangaroo to go on, not sure about the dingo. These two paintings from 1772 hang in the UK’s National Maritime Museum. #SciArt 🐡
George Stubbs’ 1772 painting of a kangaroo. The kangaroo stands on a rocky outcrop in the center of the composition. Their body is orient toward the left, while their head is turned to the right. Behind them is a green landscape with a mountain peak in the distance and pink tinted cumulus clouds. Stubbs uses atmospheric perspectiveto create a sense of depth. The kangaroo is proportioned incorrectly, standing straight legged. Their forelimbs are too short, tail lacks muscles, and forehead has a sharp slope. The painting is in an elaborate gold frame.Detail of Stubbs’ kangaroo painting, cropping in on the kangaroo.George Stubbs’ 1772 painting of a dingo. The ding has very dark chestnut fur and a white strip towards the tip of their tail. Their torso and neck are quite tick and legs short, not quite corgi proportions but getting there. Their torso dingo is seen in profile, facing to the left. They stand in an open grassland with rolling hills in the distance. The sky is filled with dramatic cumulus clouds and the painting is set in an elaborate gold frame. Detail of Stubbs’ dingo, showing the animal up close.
