I cried at my son’s first trombone lesson (he was 11 and not quite big enough to throw the slide out to the furthest pitch), in which he played Hot Cross Buns for his new teacher. I am also a proponent of giving a kid a (decent-quality) harmonica for Christmas :)

Before, during, after. (Apple Bundt Cake from Sally’s Baking Addiction.) I got this Bundt pan for Christmas (as a replacement for the much crummier one I’d had since my wedding) and this is actually my first time using it! That baking spray with flour in it is MAGICAL.

We have not turned on the furnace yet (inexplicably yesterday it got WARMER inside my house), but I did bust out the first handknit wool socks of the season today! (Yarn is Malabrigo Sock, pattern is Yarn Harlot’s Plain Vanilla Sock with some added ribbing across the instep)

Highlights. Games. Omni. I didn’t have a Cricket subscription myself, but one of my siblings did and we had a crap ton of back issues in the house. Sassy! Writer’s Digest in HS. My parents had BH&G, Woman’s Day, PopMech, Reader’s Digest, and two daily papers. I read them all.

When your farm share starts giving you butternut squash (mine already did), you can use that in any recipe for pumpkin bread, muffins, or even pie. Cut in half, remove seeds, coat with oil and lightly salt. Roast with cut side up at 425 for 45 minutes to an hour or until soft; let cool and mash.

This amazing piece of work is from New Mexico (note the Zia-star in the center -- that's important imagery and IIRC part of the state flag?). Carol won a kajillion State Fair ribbons, stitched em up into a quilt, won more ribbons, and now has her work in the Smithsonian. Good for her. So impressive.

Bought way more tissues than I need for my house, with the express intent of making 16 take them to school and scatter them around their classrooms like the Kleenex Fairy. The kid will be a little mad at me, but secondary students get sniffly too! Big-kid teachers don’t ask for tissues!

I ended up having to sew the waistband three! times! & after all that the skirt is too big in the waist. This is fine, it’s a muslin and also a problem I have all the damn time. Deeper back darts & a smaller waistband will fix it. This pattern overall is a winner: Taroko Skirt by Itch to Stitch.

So my child was told that they can use Gemini at school in some cases (some courses, notably those with U of M connections, disallow AI completely). They said, “I guess because it’s more secure?” My own guess is that on a school Chromebook, Gemini can’t be turned off. 🤮

In other news, I installed a zipper fly (I think the second in my life) and it WORKS. (This is a practice piece for a skirt which will be made of Expensive Japanese Corduroy; this woven cotton fabric was $12/yard, which is still a bit high for a fitting muslin, but it may be wearable!) #sewing
