Totally confused to have been blocked by someone I’ve never directly interacted with and, as far as I can see, have similar beliefs and aligning interests with. Wonder if it was them using a malicious block list that wrongly labelled me as something I’m not (I know I’m on quite a few of those).

Beneficent neglect may not create a show garden but it sure does wonders for the wildlife because look who I found in the most ignored corner of my garden … a rather lovely frog! #TheSmallThings #SpreadingJoy #Nature #CommonFrog

Been thinking a lot about who I am, who I want/need to become, and the process of getting from here to there. And it’s become wildly apparent certain friendships might not survive the becoming. Which is … not great but isn’t going to stop me, either, although I do worry about the possible fallout.

Blessings to all those who celebrate on this #AutumnEquinox. May we find balance in our hearts and lives and hold the light close as the days darken. Photo taken during my dawn walk, where certain signs were asked for and gratefully received. #TheSmallThings #SpreadingJoy #Witchcraft
A view across fields to the Welsh Border: Yellow green grass covers the foreground, with a band of trees across the middle of the photo. Beyond them are dark hills topped with grey white cloud pretending to be distant mountains. The highest sky is also covered in grey cloud but there is an open patch of pale blue in the centre.

This autumn the actual moment of equinox is in the early hours of Wednesday so I will be doing my personal celebrations then. But for everyone who does equinoxes/solstices on 21st of the relevant month regardless, may your celebrations be joyful and exactly what you need #AutumnEquinox

Who is Mabon? And why is His name associated with one of the celebrations of the NeoPagan Wheel of the Year? In my latest video essay I explore this very question! And also discuss whether or not it’s appropriate to rip something out of its cultural context to do with as we please.

And this is from the middle of Little Doward Hill Fort, looking east south east, roughly where 4 is on the beautifully drawn map I found while researching the history of the area. Link to the Historic England research survey below #TheSmallThings #SpreadingJoy #Nature #HillForts #WoodlandWanderings
An expanse of fern covered hill top, with undulating ground and edged with trees. The view across to the far hill is wooded with patches of open ground and the sky is blue with banks of clouds moving toward the camera. A hand drawn map of Little Doward with the hill fort boundaries marked and various points numbered.

Still on Little Doward, this time from the only “proper” road up to the hill fort (it is Very defensible) as it crests the western edge of the fort proper, with views away to the east. I do like the way the tree offers both scale and shade. #TheSmallThings #SpreadingJoy #Nature #WoodlandWanderings
A gravel “road” runs straight up the left side of the picture, cresting the hill, with scrubby grass to either side. A lone tree stands to the right of the road at the hill top proper, green against the bright blue sky. In the dip the road makes at the hill top the far horizon can be seen, another patchwork of fields and woods. The clouds, large white and fluffy, drift low in the sky, offering a good indication of the heights of the hill.

Trying not to be ungracious about a book that has beautiful descriptions of Northumberland & an author who clearly adores that place but seventeenth century witches DID NOT celebrate Mabon. The autumn equinox, yes, maybe, as a harvest festival but the name Mabon was wholly Aidan Kelly in the 1960s!

There are no visible remains of the Little Doward hill fort buildings, just the undulations of the ground which gives a fair idea, from above, what was where. The views, on the other hand, show precisely why you’d want to be up there! #TheSmallThings #SpreadingJoy #Nature #WoodlandWanderings
From the green shade of the trees on the edge of the plateau, with the moss covered remains of a wall to the right, the view of the land to the north west, across towards Hay and Hereford, is clear in the brilliant sunshine; a patchwork of mostly flat fields with hills in the far distance.

From the Little Doward woods there is a stile into the outer edges of where the Iron Age hill fort was. Not pictured is the buzzard who was keening overhead as I clambered over. #TheSmallThings #SpreadingJoy #Nature #WoodlandWanderings
A very old limestone wall runs across the bottom of the phot. A wooden stile that is pretty much a ladder provides a crossing place on the left of the frame. Beyond is a further steep bank of shrub and trees and a brilliant blue sky.

Turning south west from the caves takes you towards Little Doward, and eventually the hill fort on top. The path is steep but cool thanks to the trees. #TheSmallThings #SpreadingJoy #Nature #WoodlandWanderings
A path leading directly away through the trees, which looks flat but is deceptively steep. The sun is shining brightly but the path is mostly in shadow thanks to the lush tree canopy above.

A quick break from the scheduled holiday photos to share that I am once again at Attingham Park and this is the current, delightful, view from my face. #TheSmallThings #SpreadingJoy #Nature
A strip of vivid green lawn leads to an apple tree, now heavy with yellow fruit that is leaning slightly lopsidedly to the right. Behind the tree is the red brick of the far wall of the walled garden and a bright blue sky with patches of cloud. To the right of the lawn is a bare patch of prepared earth, to the left planted beds of herbs, flowers and veggies.

Still on the Doward but this time in a local’s spinney. Pictured is the moon door they made out of fallen wood from their trees and their very lovely golden retriever, Clover, who is the reason I met them in the first place. #TheSmallThings #SpreadingJoy #Nature #WoodlandWanderings #MoonDoor
A beautiful Golden retriever sits politely under the arch of a wooden moon door that itself is set on a path between trees. The ground that is not shrub is covered in fallen leaves and leaning on the right hand side of the moon door is a large slab of the local limestone. The light has a greenish tint as it’s filtered through so many leaves.

Remaining in the woods on the Doward, on the eastern slope outside King Arthur’s Cave, someone has created a spiral labyrinth using the limestone rocks that are everywhere here. #TheSmallThings #SpreadingJoy #Nature #WoodlandWanderings #Spirituality

Near to King Arthur’s cave on the Doward is another cave, this one lived in up to the 1800’s; the last occupants were Slippery Jem and his wife, Betsy. Honey once again providing scale. #TheSmallThings #SpreadingJoy #Nature #WoodlandWanderings
A cave entrance, the limestone rock weathered and riveted covered, ivy growing down the right hand side. You can see down into the cave, where two deeper apertures disappear into darkness. In front of the entrance the tree roots have made crude steps leading up to it. On the top step is perched Honey, a small, stuffed yellow Labrador plushie. She looks even smaller than normal given the height of cave entrance and the rock face it is in.

My week away was wonderful thus you all get to see the photos, one a day for as long as they last. Starting strong with King Arthur’s Cave on the Doward (size reference provided by Honey the plushie, who is my constant travelling companion). #TheSmallThings #SpreadingJoy #Nature #WoodlandWanderings
A deep dark cave mouth (just right of centre in the photo) disappears into moss and lichen covered limestone cliffs. Another cave entrance on the left of the main one is less visible as that aperture is not directly in the line of sight. There is a small curve of rocks at ground level to the front left of the entrances and on the end of it is perched a small beige Labrador plushie called Honey. The ground in front of the caves is carpeted in brown leaf litter.

Jane Fonda’s tribute to Dolly is perfect.
janefonda
I am devastated. I just learned that Dolly has moved on. I know that millions are mourning and I want to say this - more than anyone I have ever known, Dolly will always be with us because she was so present, so powerful, so generous and playful that she is woven into all our lives and hearts forever. We have our memories of her, her songs, Dollywood, "9to5," the millions of books she got into the hands of children, all the iconic images that bring her to us. And they are all blessings. Let's be grateful for all that she has left us to ease our sadness now. I never knew anyone like her. She was simultaneously a naughty, playful southern gal from the hollows of
Tennessee and a deep, soulful thinker who could see through people right down to their true selves. She was many things...lyricist, songstress, player of many instruments, writer, prankster, visionary, loyal friend, who'd never go to bed before she and her friends had laughed so hard
they'd have to cross their legs.
She had a survivor's instinct and seemed to always know just what to do, just what to say, to make things right....and then she's stick her butt out the car window and moon Kenny Roger's home. She was the voluptuous embodiment of empathy. That's something of hers she'd want us all to take with us.
To her gay and trans fans, I want you to know that she loved you. You know that without me telling you. She loved all her fans and they are legion. And you know she doesn't want y'all to mourn now. Dress up and celebrate her spirit. But first, watch the final episode of Grace and Frankie where she's an Angel, the head honcho working class angel in Heaven.
RIP, beautiful woman. We love you.

I feel like this must have been done at some point, response poems are a storied tradition, but anyway I wrote "Margaret, Bringing Fresh Flowers" today and thought I'd share
Uncle Gerard, do you remember how,
when I was a kid, you found me crying
and I told you it didn't seem fair how all the nice leaves
had to die in the winter when I loved them so much;
and you told me, well, it gets worse from here,
and besides, it's not really the leaves,
you're a smart kid, they'll be back next spring,
but in the meantime you're right of course,
all kinds of things are going to die
and die and die and die and die and die,
your whole life, and it doesn't get easier,
it gets harder, because eventually you realize
all those dead hands go down pointing a finger at you,
and that's actually why you're sad, see,
because in a sense you're next,
even if it takes a while for next to get here?
And do you remember
how I said, Jesus Uncle Gerry,
can't a person be sad for a tree sometimes,
just sad about a tree?
Well, anyway,
you were probably right,
and you know this already,
because I tell you this every time I come here
but I suspect it's harder to remember things
where you are now
so I'm telling you again,
just in case.
