BOOK STUFFF!!! TRISKELION is coming Fall 27. It's a big adventure: pirates, land-whales, a road that's never the same twice, a castle that no one gets into or out of. And it's about friendships changing, childhood ending, and three young people facing big questions about life, alone, and together

Background is a redwood forest with a shaft of sunlight streaking through. Foreground is a book announcement from Publishers Weekly, which reads: Kendra Levin at Simon & Schuster has acquired, in a six-figure deal, TRISKELION by Kiyash Monsef (ONCE THERE WAS). The middle grade novel follows three former best friends; when one of them goes missing, the other two reunite and discover that the made-up world they played in as younger children wasn't a game, but a real place that now has their friend in its clutches. Publication is scheduled for fall 2027; Katelyn Detweiler at Jill Grinberg Literary Management sold world rights.

Man, The Bone Temple has one of the most awesome uses of diegetic music I've ever seen. Easily up there with Sinners and Night of the Hunter. I watched it last week, and I can't stop thinking about it. If you can handle the outrageous gore and torture scenes, it's brilliant.

Never has punctuation stopped me dead in my reading tracks before, but this has to be the most eccentric use of a colon and two em dashes I've ever come across in a single sentence. Is this even legal? (cc @bcdreyer.social )

This wild sentence is highlighted: There was, literally, no one directing traffic, no one policing the streets, no one delivering the mail or picking up the garbage or bringing the food to the shops, no one stopping the looting, the rape, the revenge-taking as millions of homeless, ill-clothed, malnourished, disoriented foreigners: Jewish survivors, Polish forced laborers, former Nazi collaborators—all displaced persons—jammed the roadways, the town squares and marketplaces, begging, threatening, desperate.

I think it's weird that every news outlet is calling him "former" and "deposed," when neither of those things happened. Like, everyone has just accepted that a country can unilaterally arrest a different nation's leader, and this just triggers a normal process of succession.

This set of observations is produced by my scrolling Reddit and otherwise listening to people talk about "how to write." A) there is no requirement that any of your characters has any sort of "arc" let alone a redemption. B) there is also no requirement that your fiction has a plot.

Late to share this, but BIRD OF A THOUSAND STORIES made Kirkus Reviews' best middle grade of the year list! I'm very proud of this book, and so grateful to be recognized among some frankly intimidating company.

A layout showing the Kirkus Reviews masthead and the title, Best Middle Grade Books of the Year. Below, a screenshot of the thumbnail for the starred review of Bird of A Thousand Stories. Pullquote reads "Breathless adventures in richly imagined settings – an entrancing sequel."
