Also, rather than POSWID (the Purpose Of a System is What It Does) I think it would be more accurate to say POSWII (the Purpose Of a System is What It Incentivizes) since that is generally the actual mechanism by which What It Does differs from What It Says On The Tin.

The question Patrick McGoohan, Alejandro Jodorowsky, Hiroyuki Yamaga, and Hideaki Anno all want their audiences to ask
A still image of Harvey Korman as the character Hedley Lamarr from the film Blazing Saddles. He is sitting behind a large desk in an office lined with wooden bookshelves filled with law books. He wears a gray suit jacket over a white ruffled shirt with a black ribbon tie, looking directly into the camera with a deadpan, exasperated expression, his hands clasped together on a green desk mat. Bold white text across the bottom of the image reads: "WHY AM I ASKING YOU?".

I am quite probably the only human being on the planet who can say they have seen Jadorowski's The Holy Mountain in a theater twice in the past six months, on opposite sides of the equator and international date line but in the same season (early fall).

Also, after once again having my order called as "Michelle" it's not just white people who get other people's names wrong. Many Latino/a/x people seem unable to pronounce "Michael" to save their lives, while white folks just usually can't spell it. ("Micheal" is common) 😅

As usual in late September of an even year I find myself appreciating California's extensive efforts to make sure its citizens have some idea of what they're voting on, even if the size of our ballots and the number of races and measures we have to vote on can be a bit much.

"I'm begging you, please let me work!" the final words reportedly said by Osamu Tezuka to the nurse who tried to take away his drawing supplies, are fairly close. Hardly the first "Nobody: Osamu Tezuka: hold my beer!" but I suppose it was the last.

Four would be Americas, Eurasia+Africa, Australia, Antarctica. Five would granting that the Darien Gap was a much more impassable natural land barrier than the Middle East has ever been. 8+ would be treating at least South Asia consistently with how we treat the Europe/Asia divide.

I'm on team "the world has five or fewer continents or at least 8. Any number in the middle requires either an inconsistent definition (geographical for some, cultural for others) or for the number of continents to have changed when the Suez Canal was built."

Mostly unsure due to adoption on one side and the other going far enough back nobody remembers, with the exception of one guy who was pressed into the Royal Navy and jumped ship in Boston Harbor.

This tracks since using tear gas in warfare has been a war crime, even accepted by the US, for the last ~50 years (much of the rest of the world considered it one earlier).

I caught a preview of this at the Palm/SLO Film Center and can vouch. Dark, hilarious, worth catching with an audience if you can. SLOcals: The Palm has it starting this Friday the 16th but like most of their schedule it probably won't be around long.

Willfully remaining ignorant of the reasonably foreseeable harms caused by the actions you take or incentives you create should be treated as WORSE than knowingly causing harm because it has been responsible for more damage. Convince me I'm wrong.

Much of this goes way back in our national mythology, where the West was settled by rugged individualists (who we downplay also happened to be the beneficiaries of the largest Federal handouts in American history, mostly in the form of 'free' or cheap land and defense from its prior inhabitants)

Getting ready to head to The Palm again because I'm an absolute sucker for shit like this.
A movie listing from The Palm Theater website:

Secret VHS Double Feature
This is not your average movie night. Physical Media Society is bringing you a true VHS experience, projected directly from real, authentic tapes. That’s right — this isn’t digital, no streaming, no Blu-ray. We’re talking grainy goodness, the crackle of analog sound, and the magic of vintage physical media. The theme? Battle of the Bands! You’ll get not one, but TWO secret cult-classic films from the ‘90s featuring fictional bands that rock, brawl, and steal the show. It’s a night for anyone who craves the vibe of an old-school sleepover, cheers for the underdogs, or just wants to witness rock ‘n’ roll mayhem in its purest, analog form. Grab your friends, bring your nostalgia, and join us for a double feature like no other!
