I don’t know what the library equivalent of dimming our lights is but whatever it is, we should be doing it for Dolly because what that woman did for literacy deserves so much more recognition than it got

The Library is devastated to learn of the passing of Dolly Parton, a music legend and titan of children's literacy. Her Imagination Library program has earned multiple Library Literacy Awards and, in 2018, she visited us to donate its 100 millionth book to our collection and host a story time. 🦋❤️

Yeah agreed, citations are an essential element for integrity that shouldn’t be disincentivised!

Kirsty Wallis (she/her) @kirstywallis.com · 12/08/2026
Well yeah, your bibliography doesn’t count in a word count, why should citations add words to the total just because the referencing style puts full citations as part of the main text as a footnote instead!

My cartoon for this week’s @newscientist.com
Two scientists walk through a cluttered old-fashioned science laboratory.

The female scientist says
“Analogue instruments! Paper records! Chalk boards! I thought you'd agreed to modernise the laboratory?”

The male scientist replies
“That's what i'm so excited about: we have moved to cloud-based storage for our data!”

They step out onto a balcony. She says:
“Please tell me you haven't built a library zeppelin”

This is exactly what he has done. It floats across the sky and he adds
“It's got a fax machine!”
