Earlier this summer, I got to spend sometime with a Northern Gannet breeding colony or several thousand #seabirds #BirdoftheDay #birdphotography #birds #bird #nikon #birdlovers #birdlife #photography #art #animal #🪶 #ukbirding #ECK #noplanetbphotography #Scotland www.noplanetbphotography.art
Large seabird of the Atlantic with long, pointed bill, wings, and tail. Adults bright white with cream-colored head and black wingtips. Takes several years to reach adult plumage; juveniles are all sooty-brown and slowly acquire more white as they mature. Nests in enormous colonies on cliffs in the North Atlantic. Spends most of its life at sea, although often fairly close to land, so they are often visible from shore or on whale watching boats. Dives torpedolike into the ocean for fish. Gathers in large feeding flocks, but sometimes solitary.

After a month of drought, outside the forest the ground is dry and cracked. But within, there's still no shortage of water, and in many places footsteps quickly fill. By thoroughly removing natural ecosystems, we have removed the land's ability to regulate its own hydrology, and so much more.

Zoologist Mary Rathbun founded modern carcinology: the study of crustaceans. The Crustacean Queen single-handedly described >1,000 new crab species, establishing the foundation for modern marine biological cataloging. She was born #OTD in 1860. #WomenInSTEM #zoology
An elegant, sepia-toned studio portrait of pioneering American zoologist Mary Jane Rathbun (1860–1943), whose historical significance lies in establishing the foundation for modern marine biological cataloging. Shown from the chest up, she poses at a three-quarter angle against a dark, minimalist gradient backdrop. She gazes off-camera to the right with a dignified, contemplative, and slightly serious expression. Her hair is styled in a neat, vintage updo, and she wears delicate, thin-rimmed oval spectacles resting on the bridge of her nose. Her attire features a dark dress or blouse accented by a broad, crisp white collar, trimmed with a decorative, dark swirling soutache embroidery pattern. Multiple layers of a classic pearl necklace drape elegantly around her neck, adding a touch of timeless sophistication to her look. The soft, directional lighting illuminates the right side of her face, casting a subtle shadow behind her that creates a solemn, intellectual, and focused mood reflective of her lifelong dedication to science.

Future generations won’t believe these trees existed. They will read about 1,500-year-old cedars and 2,000-year-old redwoods and think we made them up—like dragons or griffins. But right now, we have the chance to make sure the story ends differently. Don’t let the last ancients become myths.
