Okay! Here’s the opening statement provided by the fired Rockstar workers. Key points: -There was allegedly a ‘mole’ in the union Discord server for over a year who funnelled info back to R* -It’s claimed R* only acted shortly after union members passed the 10% threshold for statutory recognition

This is inhumane and unacceptable. And how were these workers thanked for enduring these conditions? Many were laid off. This is why we're organizing. A better industry is both possible and must come to pass if our artform and dignity are to survive.

You're all contractually obligated to read this comment Rob Paulsen made on a Tim Curry interview in 2025
Rob Paulsen - Voice Actor

I had the remarkable privilege to work with Tim a few dozen times.
Kind, generous, playful, naughty and a TOTAL pro. A couple years ago, at NY Comic Con, I was in the green room having lunch and Tim
came in in his chair. Of course, I was aware of his stroke, so l walked over knelt down and said, "Tim! It's Rob Paulsen. We
worked together on..." he looked me and said, "I know who you are,
you fucking wanker." It was like a blessing from the Pope. Utterly
unique. Unstoppable. A total star.

something that got edited out of my tomb raider preview because we were covering this elsewhere, but still a sentiment i wanted to get out of my system. companies are moving the goalpost for what is "acceptable" uses of genAI as they insist that it is "inevitable" as if games couldn't be made before
This is a similar explanation to the one Sega has given for its AI use in Crazy Taxi: World Tour, and that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 developer Sandfall Interactive gave for why it used placeholder assets that it later replaced with human-made ones. All of this is slowly letting the mask slip on what has been lingering under the surface of discussions around genAI as an unethical plagiarism machine trained on other people’s stolen art and the very real threat to human jobs as suits seek to use the tech to replace human jobs: this bullshit is everywhere now, shoehorned into processes that have never needed them before.

The narrative of AI is already so ingrained in everything we know and love is convenient for companies using it. As more developers come forward that they’re using the tech, even for processes that never actually result in generated material showing up in the final product, the more it feels like studios are moving to goalpost for what is an “acceptable” use of something that is, by design, created by unethical means and utilized to unethical ends by unethical people. Every time a company is “brave” enough to admit they used generative AI as a “tool” to create better experiences, it continues to push a narrative often touted by people who have everything to gain by its perpetuation: This is inevitable. The slop machine that is killing the planet and threatening jobs in every creative field cannot be stopped because its benefits outweigh the costs.

Maybe there will come a day where every video game studio is relying on stolen art, even early on in the development pipeline, rather than the work of it. That doesn’t mean that we have to carry wasted water for tech that has poisoned everything it touches. Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis isn’t the first or last game to disappoint me on this front, but if the best use people can come up with for genAI is to create junk they wouldn’t even put in a final game, I have serious doubts about it being the inevita…

Note to other scabs: When people point out your behavior is damaging to the industry and your peers, you do in fact have the option of acknowledging it and choosing to remove yourself from the offending project. I don’t think this fixes the issue, but it shows a humanity that was lacking.

You'll recall David Wald is the former voice actor for Adam in Sk8 The Infinity who talked openly about Crunchyroll going through his fan mail and taking items intended for him.
David Wald's other posts:

Not voicing ADAM anymore feels bad.
But ya know what DOESN’T feel bad?
Doing what you know is right. Even when it jeopardizes a life and livelihood you spent decades building.
Happy International Worker’s Day.

Ya know what else DOESN’T feel bad?
NOT working for a dub studio that robs you of clearly labeled personal items and hands them out to their employees as incentives- while you’re physically in the building.

Ya know what DOESN’T feel bad?
NOT working for a dub studio that ended remote recording during a pandemic but wouldn’t spend $200 for a UV disinfecting light so actors with immune deficiencies could continue working in their booths.

Here's voice actor David Wald sharing how at the height of lockdown during a pandemic, Crunchyroll banned remote recording in an effort to union bust and also made it nearly impossible for him to work due to refusing to offer medical accommodations in studio.
David Wald tweets:

Lots of talk about the death of remote recording lately so here’s my 2 cents. I worked for a big dubbing co (IYKYK) for almost 20 years. At the height of lockdown, that co banned remote recording. If you couldn’t come into their studio, you were not cast in new projects. (1/8)

I’ve had type 1 diabetes since age 9. That’s an auto-immune disease. This makes me very vulnerable to all kinds of illnesses. A recording booth is an enclosed space full of someone else’s fresh spit with zero ventilation. (2/8)

So when there’s a new, not yet understood respiratory disease floating around as there was back then, any doctor will tell you to avoid exposure as much as possible, as mine did. So I stayed home. (3/8)

Over the course of the following 2 years, I wrote 20 or so emails to the HR dept and the producers at that co, BEGGING for a medical accommodation. I did not receive a single reply. Then they removed me from the audition list. (4/8)After 2 years, broke and desperate, I had no choice but to return to in-person recording. Shortly after, I got the Dreaded Illness and had to stay home. They tried to bully me into coming in while I was still sick. (5/8)

It should be noted that my roommate at the time also had The Illness and was bullied into coming in anyway. Someone they KNEW was sick, and forced to come to the studio, as they tried to do with me. (6/8)

It should also be noted that when you walk into this studio, the booth schedule is on monitors all over the place, and there were remote sessions all over it every time I went in. Yet, AFAIK, not a single person ever received a medical accommodation. (7/8)

So what’s the lesson? If you really want in to the dubbing business, bypass the non-union stuff. Join the union and only do union work. Have someone in your corner, fighting for your most basic human rights, or you might get crunched like I did.A user named Jodie asks:

So not only did they make a conscious decision to ban remote sessions (when they were allowed before?), they actively restarted them 2 years later but continued to deny you, and potentially others, on medical grounds? One of the main reasons to accommodate remote working? 💀

David Wald replies:

IMHO, the ban was purely a veiled effort at union-busting. You’ll notice the ban came after some very public unionization talk from out-of-state VAs who were making some very excellent points about the need for unionization. Shut them right down. Coincidence? 🤷‍♂️
