The NIH just released a proposal that will apparently hide peer reviewers’ impact scores and percentiles from the research team, their institution, and NIH program officers. All the better to obscure how funding decisions will be made primarily via political review, I’m guessing.

Book Club: Food Intelligence
In the first edition of the Conspirituality Book Club, Derek dives into Food Intelligence: The Science of How Food Both Nourishes and Harms Us by Julia Belluz and Kevin Hall, PhD. First, he looks at how RFK Jr and Jay Bhattacharya forced Hall out of his nutrition research position at the NIH in 2025. Then he covers some of the book's most intriguing findings, including: Why most people don't have "slow metabolism" Why most of us don't actually need more protein The origins of the wellness industry's fascination with products over science Why ultra-processed foods are actually dangerous (it's not what MAHA claims) The importance of calorie absorption Those microbiome tests are more scam than science Show Notes Food Intelligence: The Science of How Food Both Nourishes and Harms Us Learn more about your ad choices. Dear Director Bhattacharya: I saw that you held the second "Scientific Freedom" lecture today featuring Gary Taubes, a journalist, author, and diet advocate with no advanced scientific training and undergraduate training in physics rather than anything related to biology or medicine. I remain mystified about the "Freedom" refers to in the title of this series other than (thus far) the freedom to pontificate about topics for which one has no substantial training nor peer-reviewed publication record.

The language on multiyear funding (MYF) is ineffective. Final bill anchors MYF to 2025 instead of 2024. This means MYF will likely continue at the same rate we saw last year, where NCI's payline from ~10% to 4%. This is incredibly harmful to the US research workforce - especially early career.
