How to write Volume II differently to Volume I, so that it doesn't take 2 decades? Be clear on the "plot beats" over the three and a half decades.

I haven't read the entire Booker shortlist for two decades. But now might be the time. #5 is done and #1, #2, & #6 sit by the bed. And #3 plus #4, new to me, sound lovely.

Sad to hear Joe Romm just died at an early age. No doubt you, like me, read all his climate crisis books when no one else was writing on the subject.

A dear friend died by his own hand. Unable to bear this fact, my mind drifts back to a northern beach: shade, sun, water, not a human in sight. Go well, all.

You love to work gazing upon rippling pond, pebbly beach, or sun-speckled window? Me, when I’m rammed up onto a bench seat, I find the passage of cars (quiet behind thick glass) to be a balm.

I posted yesterday about the November 30 publication date and said "Coming in a month and a half." Over enthusiastic, that's what I am, two and a half months from my magical date.

Wonderful Washington Post interview of Marlon James (can’t wait for The Disappearers): “Björk made me think recklessness could be a good thing. And falling apart could be a good thing, and you know that the way forward is through—which never made sense to me—made sense to me after that.”

A month ago, we did a wee little hike up and down, from Horseshoe Bay to Radical Bay. Not radical at all, just a pristine beach to swim at.

Procrastination is circling a big shift from book production and promotion to real writing. I step inward through the circles. Good morning to you all.

Onward fly the memories: at Ingham in northern Queensland, three evenings by this magical pond at Tyto Wetlands, eating simple dinners, spotting birds in the last of the light.

Who is my tribe? Puzzling today over social media: who to follow, who to champion, how to engage, what's the point of any of it?

Library returns chute: a classic (grumpy, forced to read by book group), another book group so-so read, a must-read I've no time to tackle.

I like to read Hugo Award winner but haven't done so for a few years. Alix E. Harrow's THE EVERLASTING won the big prize last Saturday and goes on my to-read list.

My unboxing video doesn’t make clear how awesomely huge this book is. See how thick it is, thicker than my chin’s outreach. And at 7’x10’ dimensions, its pages are 30% larger than a typical 6’x9’ paperback. Phew!

Sitting outside, Blue-Winged Kookaburra chortling nearby, mind planning the next five weeks, I didn’t relish returning to the southern winter. Good morning to you.

The first proof copy has arrived. Alongside emotions of regret (the strain on me and my family), relief (at last after all those years!), is this dominant feeling: hooray, I'm bringing something wonderful into the world.

On Magnetic Island, I tarried at Island Spice cafe seven times. I worked soundly. Reverting to huddling in a Melbourne cafe at the tail end of winter doesn’t appeal. But home is home, right?

I didn’t expect to ever summon the gumption to swim in ocean waters again. Too old, I thought. A trek up and down to Radical Bay changed my mind. A glorious paddle in a pristine location.

The Tyto Wetlands, at Ingham in the north of Queensland, are a birdwatchers paradise. We did two big morning sessions and one less productive late afternoon jaunt. I’ll be back!

I came to Magnetic Island to relax but brought along three reference books to process. It was marvellous to sink into the 70s and 80s. And I managed to get through all three of them, a minor triumph.
