Been over a decade since I first learned of that story but it still sickens me that Bazelon has never been held accountable for her monstrous smearing of Phoebe Prince, the apologia of her xenophobic, slut-shaming bullies and statutory rape apologia, among other faults. She was only awarded for it.

Typically I dismiss melodramatic, reductive explanations of opposition as cartoonishly evil but the obstructionists & critics at this point are just knowingly defending reckless driving. You don't slow walk this because it's an equitable-yet-profitable policy addressing a public health crisis.

By all means, use the CA jungle primary as an ex of how it serves reactionary interests, as one should. But there is something so insulting about treating a State this country is plainly reliant on and has been a policy leader on climate for decades as a failed state. Get better at making your point

I hate MA's question 3 as any good Masshole in my beloved home commonwealth should but I am so tired of the "let's beat up on CA" theory of politics that is upheld at every part of the political spectrum. Politics by "let's be better than this group/area we other" is always toxic.

I also think a lot about the "three deaths": "The first is when the soul leaves the body; the second when the body is interred in the earth; and the final is when nobody remembers you."

I can't recall the source interview but the interviewee mocked this sort of obsession with the apocalypse as a form of generational arrogance as the best generation they must be the last to distract from from insecurity about mortality or simply being forgotten. And I think about it a lot.

Glad about the result, but I don’t think it speaks well of us as a country that after two years of human rights violations, war crimes, naked gangster corruption, and contempt for the Constitution, he’s finally unpopular because gas got expensive.

underrated part of El-Sayed’s messaging strategy seems to be shaming journalists who ask dumb questions that play into right-wing frames. you can’t answer these in a way that satisfies them, but you can make it embarrassing enough that you impose a toll on asking.
Abdul El-Sayed: "Weijia, with all due respect, this is the third time you've asked about a Twitch streamer ... their whole game is to make us fight culture wars so that we don't pay attention to the fact the president has made $2.2 billion ... "

For example, the hill has an article on both, but only the $5k pledge is getting the follow-up "5 things to know" treatment, and tbf it seems Axios doesn't single out the pledge to Trump either.

There is "coverage" of it, but it's the exception that proves the rule imo: most political media imo has a bias towards novelty, conflict and recency. It's why the $5k dividend pledge is getting so much more attention than this scary-but-predictable escalation in dead-ender cult worship.

This article implies that police traffic stops were an effective traffic safety policy but they were not, and it is incurious at best at the public sentiment of the AB645 speed camera programs (overwhelming support) or effectiveness of speed camera system pilots in the other AB645 (highly effective)

It sometimes feels like we're living in a ridiculously exaggerated folk tale with wildly implausible villains. For example, as the president takes billions for himself and his family and *coats his things in gold,* the soldiers fighting his war can't get toothpaste, hot water, or a clean toilet.

Okay, my describing the nature of the discount is not me articulating dislike of it. I'll refer you to my other comment i'm actually a big AB645 supporter. I tried to make a polite correction, and you keep assigning malice where there is none. Goodbye.
000
Kerry @kerrybrowne.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
I'll add that I am very pro-AB645, by no means subscribe to some Nirvana fallacy notion it's imperfect because it lacks an income-proportionate fine structure and did a lot of work to push for local implementation. I also didn't think you misspoke maliciously, so I phrased it as politely as possible
011
Kerry @kerrybrowne.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
You were replying to a comment referring to a lack of income-proportionate ticketing in the US, which is very different to means-tested discounts, and plainly alludes to how speeding fines can be *increased* for the affluent as was famously the case in Finland. www.theguardian.com/world/2023/j...
201
Kerry @kerrybrowne.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
Okay, it's not my fault you misstated what determines how fines are primarily determined, and then moved the goalposts because you don't wish to concede you misspoke. Don't gaslight me.
100
Kerry @kerrybrowne.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
I'm aware of the discount for certain thresholds: that doesn't mean the fines are *based* on income. The bill explicitly lays out different fines for different ranges of speed. The distinction is not trivial, because it implies a degree of severity for the affluent, not just leniency for the poor.
110
Kerry @kerrybrowne.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
That's incorrect. Speed cameras in CA have only been authorized in six cities under AB645 and Malibu under SB1297, and all seven will sunset in 2032. The fines are based on speed. Non-financial diversion options exist, but they're means tested and vary by city. Payment plans also an option.
