such a good eg of why political argument matters - polling previously showed over 60% support for keeping triple lock. Argue to unlock it *for something people also want* & numbers can change. (Obv can change back again if someone makes a good argument against, but either way, politics=argument)

Not sure I’ll ever come to terms with Marten de Roon not ending his career as an Atalanta player. The man bled black and blue.

Yes. At the very least the headline should include the word “says”. Also, “cuts” is a far more objectively appropriate word than “savings”. Again attribute the word “savings” by putting it in quotation marks if you must use it. As it is, this is shockingly bad journalism.

This lives on the shelf of my home office as a reminder of being 9 or 10 years old and coming face to face with Franco Baresi in the Milan store. I was so star struck that I temporarily lost the power to move or speak. Nobody else had spotted him yet. My mum had to ask him for the autograph. 💔🖤

It's funny how no-one ever asks where the money is coming from when you announce a cut in immigration.

An astoundingly high number of people whose reaction to the Paredes scuffle is so wildly out of proportion that they must either watch football for a month every couple of years or have an inescapable hatred for Argentina. 1/2

Why not just fire her? Does she really have a power base in the PLP? Considering her awful stint at the Home Office, I'm really not clear what skills Mahmood is bringing to anything.

If true, we get 3 things. None good. 1. The direct negative growth/fiscal impacts of cutting immigration. 2. A Chancellor who prioritises their own personal/ideological obsessions over the UK economy. 3. A PM who through myopia or weakness chooses 1 and 2.

All of this “Starmer is a good man who was hard done by” is pathetic. He chose to give the ‘island of strangers’ speech. He chose Mandelson. He chose McSweeney. He oversaw the winter fuel payments shambles. He chose to pander to the far right, unsuccessfully, and deservedly lost it all.

This whole Malvinas banner thing seems like it's only got so much traction because Argentina so thoroughly dominated the latter stages of the game last night that there's no "cheating Argies" material to cling to.

today marks seven years since I had my brain absolutely fried by the sight of UPSIDE DOWN PEAS #inthedaysbeforeAI
A cafe menu item, it's a pie and chips, but some peas have been cut out of another picture and pasted in to the side of the plate, upside down.

I thought Burnham’s speech yesterday was good – for disenfranchised voters in the English regions. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland were a total afterthought though. Firstly, as Swinney points out, Scotland is a nation in a (supposedly) voluntary union of nations. See also: Wales and N Ireland.

Some really quite bizarrely downbeat takes on Scotland’s result in the Guardian podcast. The only thing that mattered was 3 points, despite the hype talk of cricket scores. And on the flipside a weird acceptance that Scotland will lose against Morocco and Brazil.

BBC put a graphic up yesterday showing the average positions of Hakimi and Brahim vs Brazil (basically right wing and inverted right wing). Strongly wondering whether we see KT and Robbo against Morocco. Trying to figure out how you do that and keep Gannon-Doak in the side (non-negotiable)

A huge positive for Scotland from last night, in addition to the massive three points: Hickey and Gannon-Doak have an extra 75 minutes of competitive football under their belts

I see Infantino is defending the indefensible. You’re an arsehole, stealing football from its creators and patrons and selling it to the highest bidder. Cost of everything, value of nothing etc. Please fuck off very far, very soon.

Having a play around with FotMob’s team builder and trying to guess at what Scotland starting XI Clarke might go with for Haiti. Increasingly thinking he might veer back to a version of 5-4-1, with main question being whether Gannon-Doak, Curtis or Christie get the nod. (1/4)
