Day 3 #WeekWithoutDriving: sometimes you need to carpool! I am carpooling with friends to the pumpkin patch today. Carpooling takes a bit more coordination, but also can be a lot more fun!

A break from transportation related posts. I am obsessed with the band Mona et Toi and their record Radical Romance of the Mind! It is so good. It feels fun to find new music that I love.

My daughter rides 1 mile each way to school and back several times a week. That prepared her for some awesome trips/ bike rides this summer where she tackled 13-18 miles with hills and she is 8. She is strong and riding is part of our family culture.

For number 3 I would maintain it is still more infrastructure than ability. My kid has pretty great bike endurance, but she can only ride her own bike when it is a safe enough route. That is more limiting than mileage/ ability. Kids have so much energy and biking is a great way to use it.

Like my child’s school bus has been doing ALL week?! Somehow her bus arrives early and the kids still get to school 10-14 min late! 🤬

Working moms have complex travel patterns that involve drop-offs and pick up and running errands, too. Yes, some Dads do this too, but overwhelmingly it is women who are doing complex trip chains. Part of why I love using our cargo bike is to make this process easier. The route can be very direct.

#WeekWithoutDriving day 2: Non-drivers shape their travel patterns around the bus schedule. My bus to work comes about every 25 minutes, so every morning I am going into the office I assess which bus I can take. It varies based on how my daughter gets to school. Another time cost is planning.

Halloween is coming. You don’t have to go to a “trunk-or-treat” event in Seattle! You can close your neighborhood street to through-traffic – for free! Trick-or-Streets permits are free and easy to get. Join here: seattle.gov/transportation/trick-or-streets
The ancient two-panel Drake meme. On the top, he's looking away in disgust and holding his hand up. The text next to it says "Truck-or-treat". On the bottom, he looks pleased and is pointing toward text that says "Close your street".

A new security report from King County Metro shows that reported security incidents on buses are now less common than they were PRE-PANDEMIC, even after adjusting for somewhat lower bus ridership. In 2019, Metro saw 64 incidents per million boardings. In 2026 that number has dropped below 60.

I-638 is the most extreme measure of its kind in the US. It discriminates against girls with invasive sex inspections that will drive more girls away from sports by imposing new burdens, costs, humiliation, and possible harm. Vote NO on I-638 when your ballot arrives. #NoHateWAState

At the bottom of her picture, her quote is in dark purple text on a pale purple background: “I-638 is not about solving the real challenges students face in our schools, it’s about distracting and confusing voters for political points.” - Katie Johnson, Retired School Nurse, Everett, WA

116 people, even at a very conservative $75,000 a year is $8.7 million. Yes they do sometimes help folks get connected to services, but mostly they are policing, monitoring and removing unhoused people and assisting in trashing their belongings. Just utterly absurd and unconscionable.

I really wish that I liked the closest grocery store to my house. The best grocery store is Town & Country in Ballard. PCC is ok, but it is expensive and doesn’t have everything I want. Sometimes I go to Ken’s Market because it is the perfect size of a store. It has a good selection, also pricy.
