“An AI tool used to speed up the processing of thousands of asylum cases is failing basic accuracy tests…” The idea that synthetic text generating “AI” can be a useful aid in determining refugee status is ridiculous. We should challenge the automation of decision-making and erosion of our rights.

Wonder what they spent on it, though? Unprecedented volume of leaflets here. Plus the opportunity cost of moblilising so many activists from other constituencies who may be less enthusiastic next time.

Her canvassers, the ones who have knocked here, have nothing to offer on asylum though. No answer on the halt to refugee family reunion. Nothing to say about the use of military camps. Nothing to indicate she will call for change. Just a feelgood biography. Hope she surprises, but expectations low.

The Iran anti-sanctions motion wasn't debated in the end at Green Party conference (ran out of time as I understand it) 5 of the 12 named proposers of 'Zionism is Racism' motion were also proposers of the anti-sanctions Iran motion (and 2 more backed it in the internal party discussion thread)

Amendment 3 sought to include that the motion should not be used to “pressure, proscribe or discipline members based on affiliation with Jewish community institutions” - which had the support of party leader Zack Polanski. This amednment was voted down: 684 votes in favour 1026 votes against
This motion shall not be used to pressure, proscribe or discipline members based on affiliation with Jewish community institutions, such as synagogues, community centres or denominational groups, that describe themselves as Zionist or used to discipline or sanction Jewish members for expressing views that would be non sanctionable if expressed by non Jewish members (such as support for a binational state, or two state solution).

Some Greens feel Polanski has shown a complete lack of leadership on the motion, saying he was happy to see an influx of new members but then did nothing to make sure they stuck with Green values. In fairness, the leader has few powers. But they do have influence - and Polanski has not exerted any.

The Times - which has v much joined in the rightwing clamour to reduce immigration - now reporting that Mahmood’s “success” has cost the economy £4- to £7Bn. Would they like to now honestly confirm that fewer people = less spending power for all. There’s a high price to pay for this nasty obsession.

Falling migration numbers could cost the chancellor as much as £7bn in fiscal headroom as he writes his first budget, The Times has been told.
Government insiders believe that John Healey, who already faced an uphill battle to balance the books next month, is likely to have an even bigger challenge after immigration undershot projections from the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR).

Falling migration numbers could cost the chancellor as much as £7bn in fiscal headroom as he writes his first budget, The Times has been told.

Government insiders believe that John Healey, who already faced an uphill battle to balance the books next month, is likely to have an even bigger challenge after immigration significantly undershot projections from the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR).

The Institute for Fiscal Studies think tank estimated last month that the success of Shabana Mahmood’s reforms, which have seen net migration cut to the low hundreds of thousands, could cost Healey some £4bn.

Labour sources familiar with the budget process, however, said that the figure was now closer to £6.5bn. The OBR’s migration forecasts have been consistently higher than real numbers in recent years.

Treasury officials, who have long expected Mahmood’s reforms to cause a hit to headroom, described the number as “pure speculation” but did not deny that Healey would have to contend with a larger funding gap than expected because of falling migration

In fact, these are scenes we have not seen on British streets. Immigration needs to be deal with, I will be the first to say that and we are dealing with it. The boat crossings have been halved since six years ago, net migration is down massively.
