In 1916, 23yo Alice Ball discovered a breakthrough in treatment for leprosy. She was the 1st woman & 1st Black chem professor at UHawaii. But Ball died months after her discovery & Arthur Dean published her process as “Dean’s method.” A colleague spoke up & the name was changed to “Ball’s method.”

Sure, women are growing in representation among undergrads and grad students. But then there's this. Fig by Rissler et al 2020. The research by social scientists has shown that this isn't a passive filter. It's caused by harassment, discrimination, and overt bias. academic.oup.com/bioscience/a...
