One of the hardest things about being a cyclist is dealing with the nagging feeling that a serious crash is inevitable. Because you can indeed do everything "right" and it still does not matter.
I followed every precaution and it didn’t matter

New to biking here

I started in July around the time of the fatal car crash with that biker. That and hearing everyone who bikes to work tell me that they have had horrid experiences with cars was disheartening.

I made sure to only use protected routes. I take Southwest corridor for basically my whole trip and even though it adds so much more time to my commute, it makes me feel safe.

None of that mattered because at some point, even for a second you will hit the main road. And you will always lose to the 4 ton machine. I got hit by a car parking in the bike lane. He was more concerned with his car than the fact that I could have my life potential altered forever because he was looking at his phone. And at the end of the day, the police can literally choose to not respond to your 911 call and you get stuck with medical bills.

It’s hard to have a conversation about sharing the road when people in cars feel entitled to do whatever they want and the only person who’s ever in danger is the biker. I love biking in this city and I have found a really love and joy for the outdoors because of it. Now I am terrified to even get on a bike lane, even if there is one, if it’s shared with the main road.

Who wants to tell the suburban SUV drivers that they wouldn’t need to slam on their brakes before every speed table if they were actually going 30km/hr in playground zones? #yeg #yegbike

What does the condition of this crosswalk on a 14m wide suburban collector road (w/ a 15m crossing distance), right in front of a school, suggest about how much the city cares about pedestrian safety? BTW, 311 deems this fine with no action required. #yeg #yegbike #yegwalk

My main reflection halfway through week WITHOUT bike lanes is that riding on the road with drivers is slooooooow. Easily +10 minutes to get around compared to bike lanes. BIke lanes don't cause traffic congestion, it's too many people trying to get around using inefficient vehicles (cars). #yegbike

Riding at the speed limit (~40kmh, then 30) on a neighbourhood street, with parked vehicles and oncoming traffic. But of course the SUV driver needs to speed and unnecessarily pass dangerously. Neighbourhood streets should be the safest to ride on, yet this garbage happens frequently. #yegbike #yeg

Misaligned crosswalk markings along a shared-use path crossing with dual right-turn-on-red lanes plus dual unprotected left-turn lanes (and a slip lane directly behind where this photo was taken) tell you all you need to know about how much the city cares about safety. #yegbike #yeg

What pains me most about new greenfield suburbs in Edmonton is that they have pieces of the puzzle of building good places. Protected bike lanes, density, greenspace. But not building high speed transit that connects to the rest of the city means yet another auto dependent neighbourhood.

Speed cameras work to reduce speeding. They save lifes, full stop. They are good public policy. Imagine thinking it’s ok to attack speed cameras that work and save lives because you want to be able to break the law and endanger people without consequences.

Lots of people have a mental shortcut/block that assumes all cyclists are slow. I still get people making turns in front of me when going 35+kmh, if I were driving and going the same speed, most would never even think of doing it (lots won’t even go even if I’m signalling a turn while driving).

Finally, safer infrastructure induces demand. That means more people will bike when it's safer and 50st isn't safe right now. Measuring the number of people that want to cross a river by the number of people swimming across makes no sense. Cycling is no different.

Imagine we took the data, which show the humongousification of SUVs and trucks leads to more pedestrian deaths, to argue that speed limits must then uniformly fall to allow safety to return. People on the street need the equivalent of mandated seatbelts, airbags, and ABS, too.
