1. #MedievalSky, grab a lifejacket and a seasickness bag, we’re casting off on a thread about the Norman invasion fleet in 1066! 960 years ago, the Normans landed at Pevensey and established a base at the Roman shore fort which was already succumbing to erosion from the sea on its south side. 1/20

I've now gotten three reviews from right-wing media outlets of Pregnancy Interrupted while most center and left-wing outlets have avoided coverage of a book that contests the cultural norms we put around the science of pregnancy.

This is such an interesting point. My kid was reading Swallows and Amazons (which, make no mistake, I LOVE) and we had a great discussion about adventure/empire/childhood risk etc - but it was prompted by the use of the word ‘native’

That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t use the word or concept of the viking- but it’s not an objective historical category. And it doesn’t account for the differences and diversity among those we call vikings.

Katherine CM Cross @kcross.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
Rather, when we do this we are still taking the perspective of Latin/English/Irish sources that viewed vikings as fundamentally ‘other’ - defined by their difference to Christian populations.

My paper is called ‘Vikings in early medieval narratives: how an occupation became an ethnicity’. I tried to argue against the idea that we can use ‘viking raider’ as a neutral ‘job description’…
