In the 1830s, armed lumberjacks nearly came to blows over the US-Canada border between Maine & New Brunswick. The Pork and Beans War, as this conflict came to be known, was just one of many such disputes--many violent, all fraught--between the US & Canada over the last 250 years.

🗃️ These are good tips/reminders for students, too. I tell them to work on their essay or project for 1-2 hours and then go do something else—clean, grocery shop, exercise, hang out with friends—and then come back and revise/add to it. Spread these sessions out, don’t cram!

4 years ago I wrote about studying disease during a pandemic. It’s uncanny to revisit it as, unfortunately, it is prescient again for a variety of reasons. I *really* hope we don’t see a resurgence of brucellosis in populations again.

I cleared out my garden today and it made me feel like fall is officially over. Time can be (and I would argue should be) marked in nonhuman ways. How that looks in history and in human-nonhuman interactions is fascinating.
