The same image can be used in multiple contexts and need to have different alt text in each instance. As Sheri Byrne-Haber points out in this blog post, context is a critical aspect of alt text that many people miss. www.sheribyrnehaber.com/context-is-t...

This is the article I SWORE I would never write. But I have a different perspective on alt-text than most accessibility managers, so I decided to share it.

$30-40k, but the article says that insurance will cover most of it. Apparently each vaccine needs to be personalized and requires removing the tumor and sending it to a lab. I don't know if that effort wholly justifies the price, but at least they're not just making pills and holding them ransom.

I've been on a bit of a tear about alt text and image description recently so I'd like to share some great resources that I've come across while working in accessibility. I'll be posting them as a thread.

I gently pointed out that they didn't seem to have a great understanding of good alt text and they either blocked me or deactivated their whole account. Imagine making a whole account about alt text and not supplying a single image description. Accessibility theater. Fucking gross.

Hi @alttextrater.bsky.social! Thank you for working hard to enhance accessibility on Bluesky. It'd be great to add image descriptions to your posts. "0/5" simply points out that there is information they are missing, and with a bit of effort you could effectively help people using assistive tech.

A common question about alt text is whether or not it's appropriate to mention attributes like race or skin tone. A common response is, "It depends." In this post, Tolu Adegbite explains how race can be relevant and important in providing context. medium.com/shopify-ux/t...

I have a perfume that is my "house perfume" because it kind of smells like varnish and burnt tires (in a nice way, in my opinion) but it feels confrontational to wear it in public. Anyway I'm lying in bed smelling like a driveway. Highly recommend getting yourself a house perfume.

@nancycomics.bsky.social first, thank you for adding great alt text, this is exactly what it should be - a text alternative to an same that conveys the same information. I just wanted to let you know that when it’s all caps some screenreaders will read it letter by letter as an acronym, not a word.

Vestibular disorders affect people's balance as well as their visual perception of their world around them. Don't make animations, sliders, videos, or rapid movement start automatically, as autoplaying elements could trigger a bad reaction in people who have vestibular disorders.

I am almost positive that I only ate half of the sandwich I got for lunch. I'm hungry, which supports this theory. But! I can't find the other half, only the balled up wrapper, and so I believe there is a loose half a steak and cheese sub somewhere in my apartment.

I am an accessibility engineer, I use assistive tech myself, and while I appreciate this suggestion I will in turn suggest that this phrase has become nothing more than a shibboleth and is seldom, if ever, backed up by actually meaningful action. Pop quiz: do images ALWAYS require alt text?
000
katie buechner @kbuechner.bsky.social · 19/02/2026
Replying to a post with "use alt text" without supplying the missing image description is useless. Stop pretending to care about accessibility when all you want to do is score points off your Posting Enemies.
