Rahm Emanuel, who has about a good a chance of being president as I do, has been profiled like 9 times in the last couple months in major newspapers. It really shows you how profoundly out of touch the people are that drive much of our national political discourse.

the way to understand a piece like this from schmitz is that he lives in an urban, cosmopolitan millieu and the popularity of country music is a novelty to him. and so to explain it, he has to fit it into his volkish conception of america, whether or not that makes any actual sense.

It’s mind-blowing that we have literal white nationalists in the White House carrying out unfathomably cruel, abusive, white nationalist policies, and the punditariat has spent the last two weeks debating if some people were too intemperate after a Black man was murdered by cops six years ago.

One additional note on this. I'll never forget the night the amendment was approved. At the event I was at I heard a medical student exclaim, "Now I can practice in Ohio." This decision was meaningful to physicians - especially OBGYNs - deciding whether they had a future in the state.
