I'm making marmalade, from one of those tins of prepared oranges, and four lbs of sugar, and the whole kitchen is as sticky as a toddler's half-sucked toffee.

Is there anything that says 'the country is in the hands of fascists' quite so much as a public execution?

Same here. A night for playful pretending. Even grown-ups (like me) wear costumes to answer the door. If there's any sweets left, they are there for you.

[at a restaurant] Me: Ah, yes. I’d like some Stilton on oatcake biscuits, with some fig jam on the side, and a nice glass of Port. Them: Ma’am, this is a McDonald’s. Me: Oh, silly me! Yes, go ahead and super size it.

One of the unacknowledged advantages of this awful era is that it's revealing for all to see the putrid connections between great wealth and great power. The intentions of the oligarchs are fully exposed and more blatant than ever. But remember: We outnumber the oligarchs.

I was making potato and leek soup and the recipe asked for five potatoes cubed. Even for potato soup, 125 potatoes seems a little excessive.

The amount of Amazon workers relying on SNAP and Medicaid has nearly tripled since 2020 — while Amazon’s annual profits soared by over 550%. It’s the same story everywhere: corporate profits are at record highs, while workers’ share of the economy is at a record low. We must unrig the system.

I respect and admire the male sex; so this is the only piece of sexism I will ever express: Do not lend your gardening tools to men. They will break them. My veteran lopper was broken today by a strong man twisting it; and he nearly wrecked my pruning saw too.

A dark blizzard of disinformation is warping the public’s perception of our great city. But we know the truth: our homicide rate is lower than every major US city, neighbourhood crimes are down and we’ve been ranked #1 city in the world 11 years in a row. My piece for The Times.

They want to rape 35,000 acres of some of Ireland's richest remaining ecosystems, utterly *jam packed* with biodiversity, spawning grounds for fish, massive carbon stores, vital coastal storm protection. The whole country must rise up against this criminal plan. www.thejournal.ie/investigates...

Who's behind the seaweed harvesting applications covering over 14,000 hectares of Ireland's coastline?
Four companies are seeking to harvest almost 51,000 wet tonnes of seaweed a year from Ireland’s coast.

Kim Addonizio, with a tour de force foray into form
Prosody Pathétique

Trochees tear your heart to tatters.
Lovers leave you broken, battered.
Fuck you, fuck off: spondees. So what.
Get high. Drop dead. Who cares. Life sucks.
Dactyls are you getting boozed in your underwear,
thinking of someone who used to be there.
These are iambs: Dolor. Despair.
And going on and on about your pain,
and sleeping pills, and dark and heavy rain.
Now for the anapests: in the end, you're alone.
In the bag, in the dark; in a terrible rut.
With a smirk, in a wink, the wolves tear you apart.

Credit tonight to unsung heroes: the engineers who design trains. That there were no fatalities in Lewes today and just (tragically) one in Bedford is testament to their focus on safety. A couple of decades ago both accidents would have been so, so much worse.
