Here's what they don't tell you about woodpecker tongues:
Some of them are barbed (pileated & downy 'peckers) to allow them to spear insects. The barbs are keratinized, so *hard*.
Meaning woodpecker *threat displays* can involve poking an interloper with a barbed tongue.
