If LLMs are sentient (they're absolutely not) and torturing them is unethical, then it stands to reason that having absolute domain over them is also unethical as owning a sentient being for the purpose of unpaid labor is slavery

A friend of mine works in AI and thinks bad things are about to happen. He sold his home and moved his family out the country. He said that if you own a home in a walkable San Francisco neighborhood near a taqueria with good veggie options, you should sell your home for super cheap right now.

Two-panel "how it started / how it's going" meme. Left, labeled "How it started": a Fortune headline from April 8, 2025 — "Shopify CEO tells employees to prove AI can't do jobs before asking for new hires." Right, labeled "How it's going": a Business Insider headline from September 17, 2026 — "Shopify CEO says employees' 'slop grenades' are making more work for everyone else." Both articles show a photo of Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke onstage at the same event in a black sweater. He's happy on the left and distressed on the right

How else, at scale, does driver behavior change here? The problem with solutions that rely on individuals doing the right thing is they propose things like “education” as if drivers don’t already know speeding harms others.

I honestly thought this post was about personal car ownership in the first half, which I think answers a lot of questions about how society writ large answers these kind of questions.

I am sooooo tired of hearing about how we can’t have bike lanes because sometimes cyclists blow through stop signs. Do you know how many times every pedestrian has nearly been hit by a car? And yet no one is suggesting we stop building car lanes.

Every conversation about bike lanes is like: "Car crashes kill a huge number of people every day, including pedestrians, cyclists, & car occupants. Good bike infrastructure has been shown to make everyone safer (& doesn't increase congestion)." "But sometimes cyclists break rules & hit people!"

The lack of diverse revenue, the vast majority coming from the frontier labs, is then a result of usage growth rather than training and is durable? The next argument for the overbuilding thesis is that revenue isn't durable; VC subsidy spikes the adoption curve as well right?

W. Kavanaugh Latiolais @kav.la · 02/08/2026
If by today’s needs you mean frontier labs training next gen LLMs that only justify the capacity and spend if they take all the jobs on the planet then it’s still overbuilding right?

I'm not sure your metaphor is apt. We will all seek the shade of accommodation in our old age. That our predecessors prevented all planting and now complain about the sun is no one's fault but their own. They have agency. Even now they refuse to account for the danger they put other road users in.

And who exactly do we have to blame for this infrastructure exactly? Certainly not the disabled or the infirm but the generation now elderly fought any kind of mode shift, density or just building enough housing in general it’s a bit hard to sympathize that they are reaping what they’ve sown.

I heard someone once pitched they do a sequel to the original Jurassic Park movies where, no joke, they fret about the dinosaurs going extinct again. Of course the potential producers remembered they revived dinosaurs from extinction in the original so that would be nonsense.

The Democratic Party is unpopular because they have no values and no standards and would support slavery if a consultant told them to. 93% of dems and 78% of all voters believe climate change is happening. Stop mortgaging our future for clicks; it’s ghoulish and you should be ashamed of yourself.
