The land is marshes, plague pits and industrial waste sites. For London 2012 every piece of soil had to be washed to remove the contamination. The shapes of the modern, the shopping centres et al, are defined by the sins of the past. East London is what lies beneath.

I’m on strike to protect Goldsmiths from a management that in my opinion appears intent on destroying a unique institution. They claimed there is a deficit that needs redundancies, but Novara is reporting there has been no deficit in the last 5 years.
I've now been on strike for 130 days. Part of the longest university strike in history.

though the situation is different in different places, the fight to protect the conditions of public (and quasi public) sector workers is international - in our own sector we see similar dynamics, and are in solidarity with, colleagues striking in Edinburgh, Nottingham, LSBU, Lincoln, among others.

The processions to Tyburn gallows were stopped in the 1780s and executions moved to Newgate prison, in part because policing the massive crowds became deemed too dangerous after the Gordon Riots.

In 2012-13, there were 51 UK universities offering Russian and East European Studies. In 2024-25, there were 32, and provision is shrinking further. Perhaps that's a serious security risk? www.thebritishacademy.ac.uk/policy-and-r...

Not to take away from celebrating Carson, but she's a "former professor" here in large part because the university shut down her department and cancelled its classes. What pride does the institution claim now—years later—when austerity is forcing other scholars out? What does that 'pride' do?

RIP Chris Wickham. Unlike so many historians who emphasise particularities and contingencies, he was the master of constructing grand, coherent, beautifully rendered worlds out of his evidence. This, from his 2021 Past and Present essay, is a masterpiece of historical writing.
