Bleak. I think higher ed folks don’t always pay enough attention to what’s happening in k-12 so I appreciate Matt’s analysis that spans both. Alpha may be small in numbers but the rhetoric echoes so much of what I hear (and what folks are fighting against) in many nyc school districts.

When they get back in power, Democrats need to go all-in on higher education. We need a campaign of reinvestment in public universities across the country that makes the Morrill Land-Grant Act look like nothing by comparison *and* a GI Bill of Rights-style program of tuition grants.

The folks who fund the school. The folks who make policies about how teachers and services are allocated. Overall—the article could have benefited from more analysis of the power structures NYC public schools and behind Jones’s family’s decision.

Ahhhhh that Nikole Hannah-Jones piece 😬😳 Pretty disconcerting to me too that the majority of the nyt comments focus on what a “brave” or “powerful” piece it is, and not at all on how her daughter might feel about this profile, or the one from 10yrs ago? When she would have been 6yo? Ahhhh

What’s missing: 1/ Any framing about what higher is or has been that misses the big public investment post-WW2 and then massive disinvestment starting in the 1980s which spirals into rising costs and student debt is disingenuous at best. 5/

What an *amazing coincidence* that the moves to undermine public higher education by shifting its costs from the government to students and families begins in earnest in the 1970s.

Hey I'm not actually done talking about Dolly Parton. 🧵 Specifically I want to talk about her album 9 to 5 and Odd Jobs, released in 1980 (not the soundtrack to the film 9 to 5, that's a different thing). The whole album is about work, with most of the songs focused on a different type of worker.

A 30% cut to international enrollment is lights out at many public R1’s. And: once again, this is not bungling on the part of the administration, or unintended consequences. It is *precisely* the intention.
