Friends, please check out this new report on community-based archives, "Powerful But Precarious," linked from the Mellon website. A participatory action research study, it provides a rich portrait of these organizations—their aspirations, wants, and resilience. Enjoy! www.mellon.org/features/com...

Bleak. I think higher ed folks don’t always pay enough attention to what’s happening in k-12 so I appreciate Matt’s analysis that spans both. Alpha may be small in numbers but the rhetoric echoes so much of what I hear (and what folks are fighting against) in many nyc school districts.

When they get back in power, Democrats need to go all-in on higher education. We need a campaign of reinvestment in public universities across the country that makes the Morrill Land-Grant Act look like nothing by comparison *and* a GI Bill of Rights-style program of tuition grants.

Good editors & a good journal. (JEP is where I wrote the article of mine I like best, largely bc special editor @katinalynn.bsky.social's inspiring CFP, & her+journal team, supported me experimenting w/article format+voice in ways that felt true+urgent to me.)

The folks who fund the school. The folks who make policies about how teachers and services are allocated. Overall—the article could have benefited from more analysis of the power structures NYC public schools and behind Jones’s family’s decision.

There are a million other ways to write about structural inequality without putting your own kid on the front lines. I’m sure I don’t know the whole story but I just can’t imagine writing about my kids (or their schools) like this 😬

Ahhhhh that Nikole Hannah-Jones piece 😬😳 Pretty disconcerting to me too that the majority of the nyt comments focus on what a “brave” or “powerful” piece it is, and not at all on how her daughter might feel about this profile, or the one from 10yrs ago? When she would have been 6yo? Ahhhh

So much of this resonates with me, too. It has felt incredibly liberating to realize that my scholarly timeline is a long one! The writing and thinking will always be mine, I can return to them if and when I want to, knowing the patterns sometimes take a long time to come into focus

What’s missing: 1/ Any framing about what higher is or has been that misses the big public investment post-WW2 and then massive disinvestment starting in the 1980s which spirals into rising costs and student debt is disingenuous at best. 5/

2. Any discussion about higher ed that misses that women and people of color were largely excluded until the *1970s* misses the fulcrum of these debates. 6/

What an *amazing coincidence* that the moves to undermine public higher education by shifting its costs from the government to students and families begins in earnest in the 1970s.
