Writer, Producer, Cats and Dogs Living Together. I thought of that. Turns out it already existed but I arrived at it independently. One day, I just disappeared with an electric pencil sharpener and the Christmas card list.

A sense of what A.I. is takes shape in our minds through repeated use. It's like a helpful assistant, albeit one that may forget things that it seemed to know about us yesterday, or completely reverse the advice it gave us a moment ago, or occasionally hallucinate a citation that doesn't exist. Why would anyone fear a helpful, if forgetful, intern?

One of the things I know about writing is this: spend it all, shoot it, play it, lose it, all, right away, every time. Do not hoard what seems good for a later place in the book or for another book; give it, give it all, give it now. The impulse to save something good for a better place later is the signal to spend it now. Something more will arise for later, something better. These things fill from behind, from beneath, like well water. Similarly, the impulse to keep to yourself what you have learned is not only shameful, it is destructive. Anything you do not give freely and abundantly becomes lost to you. You open your safe and find ashes.

I’ve reached the point - well actually, I reached it a while ago - where I’m militantly anti-AI. Fine - use it in bioscience labs and radiology where it might help analyse data more effectively. Use it sparingly for systems engineering. Everywhere else, it can fuck off.

We celebrate Dolly as the exception, but she doesn't have to be one. She invited all of us to be better, kinder, and more accepting. We don't have to embrace a culture of inhumanity, or give in to divisive rhetoric, or idolize greed. We can transform our pain into something other than cruelty.

Reboot culture is as much an ideological choice as a financial one. Placing a limit on stories told places a limit on ideas, on human imagination and critical thought. We don’t believe in endless possibilities because we become used to predictable outcomes.

Le Guin on the idea that there is a secret to getting good at writing.
I will dispose of the first myth as quickly as possible. The “secret” is skill. If you haven’t learned how to do something, the people who have may seem to be magicians, possessors of mysterious secrets. In a fairly simple art, such as making pie crust, there are certain teachable “secrets” of method that lead almost infallibly to good results; but in any complex art, such as housekeeping, piano-playing, clothes-making, or story-writing, there are so many techniques, skills, choices of method, so many variables, so many “secrets,” some teachable and some not, that you can learn them only by methodical, repeated, long-continued practice — in other words, by work.

A.I. is vacuuming up so much of our land, talent, semiconductor chips, building materials and, above all, so much of our money that it is beginning to crowd out the rest of the economy.

In other words, A.I. isn’t merely compensating for the weakness in the rest of the economy. It is, at least in part, causing it.

Forcing employees to use AI that doesn't work for the sake of efficiency--which incentives employees to waste company resources to pretend they are using it--is some real Catch-22 (the novel) shit. The book should be required reading in schools. It's like the skeleton key for our absurd times.
"Tokenmaxxing," the idea held by some tech company executives that if employees are not maximizing their use of Al tools at work they are not being productive enough, has become common in the industry, with some bosses bragging about how they are spending more money on Al tool usage costs than actual human employees. This has resulted in a situation where some employees are running scripts that make it seem like they are using Al tools a lot to game metrics and appease their bosses, but the Al tools are not doing anything productive and are burning money and resources with no benefit to productivity.
One Amazon employee said they "cheated" their way up Amazon's internal Al usage leaderboard after they were told in a performance review that they're not using Al enough at work. They told me it was trivial to do so. I'm not providing exact details of how this employee cheated in order to protect their anonymity, but essentially employees can automatically prompt the Al tools with an endless series of tasks that have nothing to do with their job.
