This iconic image, titled Café, Main (1960), was captured by the celebrated German-born Canadian street photographer Fred Herzog.

The Location: The photograph depicts daily life on Main Street in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Herzog made Vancouver his primary canvas after immigrating there in 1953.Artistic Style: Herzog was a massive pioneer in color street photography during an era when serious documentary and fine art photography were strictly shot in black-and-white.The Medium: He shot almost entirely using Kodachrome slide film. This gave his photos signature, painterly color tones, though it made his work incredibly difficult to print and exhibit properly until digital printing evolved decades later.Key Elements: The shot showcases many of Herzog's favorite motifs: a glowing neon sign, storefront glass reflections, potted plants on a window sill, and a raw, candid human interaction looking out at the street.

Taken from a road leading to walks at Blackdown. The road is a hollow way with large trees lining it and the bottom of the trunks at my eye level. Between these two monster-like trees covered in moss is a long distance view across the Surrey Hills and South Downs.
