To contextualize: if the average American (by age 39.1 yo) spent the same percentage (0.024%) of their net wealth (median $540k) on an election, it would cost $129. Musk’s $200 mil is our $129.

This story by @adambonica.bsky.social is quite amazing but also fully on point, particularly for the NYT. After commissioning an opinion piece on predatory fundraising by Democratic Party, they were threatened with legal action and killed the story, despite it being factually correct.

The vote on the constitutional question in the birthright citizenship case is an absolute scandal slate.com/news-and-pol...
On Tuesday, the Supreme Court ruled that the first sentence of the 14th Amendment means exactly what it says: Birthright citizenship is the nation’s fundamental law, and Donald Trump cannot repeal it via executive order. The vote was 5–4. This outcome is, of course, a relief. But the margin is a scandal. It is nothing short of stunning that Trump came one vote away from convincing the Supreme Court to repeal the bedrock of the Reconstruction Amendments based on a brazenly partisan contortion of their text and history. A view held only by fringe, far-right nativists until very recently has secured support from four of the nine members of the court: Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch, and Brett Kavanaugh. This is a shocking development that should upend all expectations that this Supreme Court can be trusted to apply the most basic constitutional guarantees when a Republican president seeks to nullify them. If a theory flatly rejected by all serious legal scholars and historians can come one vote away from success, no rights are safe. Everything is on the table.

One of the most clarifying passages I've ever read on what "polarization" actually means in the U.S."
Excerpt from the book How Democracies Die.

"America's democratic norms, then, were born in a context of exclusion. As long as the political community was restricted largely to whites, Democrats and Republicans had much in common. Neither party was likely to view the other as an existential threat. The process of racial inclusion that began after World War II and culminated in the 1964 Civil Rights Act and 1965 Voting Rights Act would, at long last, fully democratization the United States. But it would also polarized it, posing the greatest challenge to established forms of mutual tolerating and forbearance since Reconstruction."

"Antiseptic judicial rhetoric cannot do justice to what is happening" The opinion, by a Clinton appointee, says Trump admin's conduct is "beyond the reach of ordinary legal description. It is an assault on the constitutional order." reposting with alt text storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...
screenshot of opening paragraph of a judicial opinion, linked in post. Paragraph reads as follows:

"Antiseptic judicial rhetoric cannot do justice to what is happening. Across the interior of the United States, agents of the federal government—masked, anonymous, armed with military weapons, operating from unmarked vehicles, acting without warrants of any kind—are seizing persons for civil immigration violations and imprisoning them without any semblance of due process. The systematic character of this practice and its deliberate elimination of every structural feature that distinguishes constitutional authority from raw force place it beyond the reach of ordinary legal description. It is an assault on the constitutional order. It is what the Fourth Amendment was written to prevent. It is what the Due Process Clause of the Fifth Amendment forbids."

The snake eating its own tail effect of AI agents isn’t so much a problem of training data model collapse as the collapse of the social epistemic foundations by which human sense-making can be carried out at all—and which AI agents *also* rely on for whatever facsimile of sense-making they conduct.
Journalistic integrity aside, I don't know how I can give a better example of what's at stake here. Yesterday | wondered what another agent searching the internet would think about this. Now we already have an example of what by all accounts appears to be another Al reinterpreting this story and hallucinating false information about me. The NH legislature is advancing regressive bills mandating curriculum and allowing firearms on campus, and prohibiting Chinese nationals from enrolling in public colleges and universities. The latter exceeds even the Chinese Exclusion Act (1882) in its defamatory racism. Hate out of Higher Ed.
Text of proposed legislation reading: "STATE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE

In the Year of Our Lord Two Thousand Twenty-Six

AN ACT prohibiting nationals of the People's Republic of China from attending state institutions of higher education.

Be it Enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court convened:

1 Short Title. This act shall be known as the "New Hampshire Higher Education Security Act".

2 Statement of Findings and Purpose. The general court finds that nationals of the People's Republic of China (PRC) who are not U.S. citizens pose a presumptive risk of hostile action through asymmetric warfare perpetrated by the Chinese communist government against the United States of America, and an existential threat to New Hampshire and its citizenry, including through espionage, intellectual property theft, technology transfer, and chemical, biological and cyber terrorism and warfare via affiliation with higher education institutions. These nationals pose a hostile risk to critical infrastructure, supply chains, agriculture, and the lives and livelihoods of Granite Staters. The purpose of this act is to protect national security while providing due process.

3 New Section; PRC Nationals; Admission Prohibited. Amend RSA 187-A by inserting after section 10-a the following new section:

187-A:10-b PRC Nationals; Admission Prohibited."
