Nobel Laureate Anne Carson, with one of my all-time favorite opening lines and one of my all-time favorite closing lines.

O Small Sad Ecstasy of Love

Anne Carson

I like being with you all night with closed eyes.
What luck—here you are
coming
along the stars!
I did a road trip
all over my mind and heart
and
there you were
kneeling by the roadside
with your little toolkit
fixing something.

Give me a world, you have taken the world I was.

There will be more social sanctions for being cruel to a model than to a Black child. That’s really the essence of the dehumanization we’re dealing with.

This is honestly surreal. We are 5 Portland donors away from the 750 Portland donors needed to unlock another $100,000 in matching funds from the city. We have completely maxed out tier 1 so we won’t receive more matching funds until we meet the 750 threshold. Can you donate $5 at the link below?

A sharp rise in immigration arrests in broad daylight across the Portland metropolitan area is sparking fears among advocates that another federal operation could be underway. At least nine people were confirmed detained on Tuesday across Gresham, Troutdale and parts of eastern Portland.

States with the strongest protections have fewer ICE arrests, and those with wishy-washy policy like New Jersey have arrest rates similar to collaborator states like Florida or Georgia.

Right now we have a Council that is reticent to say no to the police bureau on just about anything. Oversight is viewed as an attack rather than a partnership. The police bureau should not get to procure new technology without going through the Data Privacy Office, just as every other bureau can’t.

When I created Portland’s first Data Privacy Office it was with the intention of investigating any new technologies purchased by the city, or assessing new data collected. Until the office is implemented by the executive branch, PPB will get to pilot new tech with no oversight unless Council says no

Just starting this. Noteworthy on p1 that the definition of "Police Action" doesn't cite any of the positive public safety activities PPB constantly promotes such as investigations, de-escalation, rendering assistance, etc. Examples given are just stops, searches, arrests, and uses of force.

Excerpted definition from quote posted PDF

"Police Action: Any circumstance, on or off duty, in which a sworn member exercises or attempts to exercise police authority. This includes, but it [sic] not limited to, stops, searches, arrests, and use of force."

Last thing I’ll say on this is that if you’re a seedling getting into politics and you have any backbone to fight for marginalized people, you will subsequently face operators who will beat that instinct out of you. You must stay true to your center. You know in your gut & heart what you must do.

Sometimes my wife and I like to send each other text messages as though they’re democratic fundraising messages, and I believe she has produced the jewel of the form.

, it's
and I
have some personal news to share with you.
Being a mom is one of the greatest joys of my life, and I feel deeply that we should have salad tonight
This year has been challenging in many ways, and I have immense gratitude for the kindness and support of family, community, and people like you who have continued to stand by me through everything. It means the world, and I wanted you to be among the first to know that squash is in the oven and kale is in the fridge.

As many of you are aware, ve been navigating one of the most challenging periods of my day while waiting for dinner.
Facing baseless federal hunger brought on by not eating since lunch, fighting for the working kids of this country, and now caring for a mean toddler and helping him grow up in a world that isn't always easy. But it has also reminded me exactly why I do this work and who I do it for.
I will never stop working to eat dinner. I will never stop fighting for what is right, even when there is also some feta in the fridge. And I will never stop being so very thankful that you are by my side in this important work and that there is tahini in the pantry for dressing
With love and gratitude,
stop to end
