Went AWOL while our house is undergoing repairs. Had to stay with a relative for two weeks and got lots of reading time in as a result. Just got caught up on my masterlist of what I've been reading lately with all my recent titles.

Picked up a few books in passing the book store because I'm a complete sucker and they got new discounted items in. I was surprised in particular to find "Walking Practice" on those shelves (my partner got some classic scifis). The other two are from general fiction and I'd been meaning to nab them.
A photograph of three books overlaid a brown paper bag on a light hardwood floor. The book on the left is light blue with a black, yellow and white illustration made to look like an etching of a stylised solar system.

Text reads:
Ted Chiang
Stories of Your Life and Others

The second book has a black cover with a stylised image of mishmashed body parts and teeth in vibrant, grotesque shades.
Text reads:
"Vibrant and memorable"
- New York Times Book Review
Dolki Min
Walking Practice: a Novel
Translated by Victoria Caudle

The third book has three bands in blue, white and black, with an illustration of a pair of hands forming a shadow puppet of a dog's head.
Text reads:
The Hounding
Xenobe Purvis
"Outstanding"
- New York Times
"A beguiling fever dream"
- Stacey Halls
"Extraordinary"
- The Times
"Tense and absorbing"
- Washington Post
"Exquisitely accomplished"
- Daily Telegraph
"A rare and twisted pleasure"
- Lucy Rose

Picked up some new books recently. The Dressmaker is from an op shop (I went looking for westerns, mostly found Mills & Boon and contemporary Outback Rural Mysteries, which didn't quiiiite fit the itch). The manga is one I've been wanting to pick up and hadn't found locally before today.
Photograph of three books laid out in a loose fan formation on a hardwood floor. The two on the left are volumes 1 and 2 of the On and Off Work-Life Imbalance manga by Shinnosuke Kanazawa. The cover depicts the two main characters wearing Japanese-style punk and lolita fashion ensembles on volume 1 and more old-school punk outfits on volume 2. The third book is The Dressmaker by Rosalie Ham. The cover shows a black and white scene of the outback with the horizon far in the distance and clouds low in the sky. A clothes line has a single dress hanging from it in loose folds. Below a pink bar with the title is a colour version of a similar scene without the clothes line or dress.

Watched The Sheep Detectives tonight and glad I read the book first for a few reasons. The film is fun, but flattens a lot of characters out of time constraints and plot change necessity. In its favour, it's also a true murder mystery with the rules included, unlike the novel.

Found out today that a) Park Seolyeon wrote a sequel to A Magical Girl Retires, which is out next month and b) also wrote a book about the Japanese occupation of Korea. So dropped by the book store on my way home from an errand.
A photograph of two books on a light hardwood floor. The left book has a red cover with stark serif text.
Text reads:

/
Capitalists Must Starve: A Novel
By Park Seolyeon
Translated by Anton Hur

The book on the right has a starkly yellow and black cover, depicting an ominous figure with an eerie grin and long ears wrapping its arms around a grim-faced magical girl with blonde hair. They are surrounded by falling dandelion blossoms.
Text reads:
