And you know what? Actually yeah I think filmmakers and actors etc SHOULD familiarise themselves with the institutions, festivals, companies etc they work with. And sometimes you can't avoid working with shitty people. But you have to be willing to explain yourself if that's your decision

Fly's Top Apps of 2025

Reader / Readwise
Two apps, working together seemlessly. Reader is a read-it-later app and its interface has actually made me read more longform content again. Annotating while reading is super simple and those highlights get synced straight to Readwise, where I review 9 highlights daily which is so much fun, actually, and helps me remember what I read. Worth the Pro version (student rate) for me.

Todoist
I feel like finally, finally, a to-do-list app actually works for my brain and it's Todoist. My phone is cutting support in a month and if I don't find a new phone by then I'm probably gonna have to die.

Agenda
The note taking app that got me through 2025, especially in uni. I love it's chronological ties to calendar events. I'm not sure if I'm going to keep it up, but it's one of the better apps I have tried.

Capacities
The note-taking app I'm writing this on. I've only had it for a few days but the way it works with objects and linking instead of folders seems to really mesh with my brain. We shall see where it takes me in 2026.

Pagebound
I stumbled over this on Instagram as an answer to book track apps being swarmed by generative AI. I have yet to find the app that eliminates Goodreads for me (it just has the most thorough data) but Pagebound is fun and I love their discussion forums.

Softgoods
An app to track your fic reading. I notoriously kept this in early 2025 but then forgot about it. Now I'm determined to keep it up for 2026. It's a bit clunky, but gets the job done!

Fantasy Hike
Who doesn't want to be a hobbit on a journey to Mount Doom. I made it this year. And promptly started the trek anew.

Daylio
Discovered this in late 2024 and have actually been using it for 12 months straight? Crazy. Super simple diary, I mostly just track stuff with this and add a couple photos and an emotion and it's done.

Libby
Been rediscovering the library both physically as well as digitally. And without Libby, life's just sad.

While defending the luddite argument in Discord, I stumbled into this IMO succinct explanation for opposing generative AI: At every step in the process, it impoverishes us.

AI impoverishes us at every step of the process:
- data centers pollute our environment
- energy use drives up costs
- content theft robs creators of income
- the actual output is used to displace workers and depress wages
- using it harms our mental health and impairs our competence
- the flood of AI slop is damaging our sociopolitical landscape

All in service of making a worse product - and world - to enrich a handful of already spectacularly wealthy people
