In Ireland, you get your head bitten off for mentioning these very simple and irrefutable points. Time to grow up folks, there are hard decisions to be made.

I was on the radio yesterday making the point that we shouldn’t just allow Dublin Airport to grow endlessly based on consumer demand without taking other factors into account. Media and government in this country are complicit in deflecting attention from inconvenient truths.

💯 He called me out of the blue because I had made some noises about Wood Quay at a council meeting. You have to really care about Dublin to voluntarily wade through one of those 😀 A legend, he is missed.

I had a couple of long phone conversations with Frank McDonald earlier this year, discussing what to do about Wood Quay now that DCC have decided to abandon it. He was so passionate about Dublin’s built environment and generous with his time. RIP.

“More than 100 elected officials have joined me in calling on parking lot and garage owners across New York City: Don’t give ICE a place to operate. Don’t rent to them. Tell them they’re not welcome.

Last week, ICE agents shot Oscar Belgal in the neck in Marble Hill while his 5-year-old son sat in the car. They had been staging nearby in a private parking lot.

Our city laws keep ICE off public property. Now, we’re calling on private property owners to do the same. One garage on Morton Street already removed ICE vehicles after neighbors spoke out. Every owner has that power.”

Yesterday marked the biggest public sector strike since 2009. Our representatives were on the ground all over the country, visiting pickets and speaking to as many striking workers as possible. Here's what some of them had to say about why they're striking, and what they want from negotiations.

The Taoiseach's arrogance towards public sector workers has been astonishing. Instead of taking responsibility for the lack of engagement with unions, he has just dismissed their frustration offhand. Unions have no choice but to strike. But govt can choose to put a credible pay deal on the table.

democracy doesn't begin and end at the ballot box! the right to organise, protest and withdraw your labour is a key part of a healthy democracy too!!! big businesses spend millions lobbying to tip the scales of "democracy" in between elections, protest is ordinary people's way to push back!!!!!

New working paper: the Norwegian wealth tax was a huge success. The "exodus" of wealthy people never happened (less than 100 individuals left). Tax revenue increased by 71.5%. No changes in business activity or investment. www.nber.org/papers/w35854
Taxing Entrepreneurial Wealth: Evidence from
Norway, 2021-2025
Marius A. K. Ring
WORKING PAPER 35854|
DOl 10.3386/w35854
ISSUE DATE October 2026
Whether imposing higher taxes on business owners adversely affects business activity by constraining investment and inducing capitalist flight is a central question in the ongoing debate on how to tax the ultra wealthy. To shed new light, I exploit a series of related Norwegian reforms during 2021-2024 that increased dividend tax rates, removed migration-related capital gains tax loopholes, and nearly doubled the effective marginal tax rate on business wealth. These reforms spurred international debate and, allegedly, an "exodus" of Norwegian billionaires (Financial Times,
2023). While I document clear effects on migration, these responses are concentrated among the top 0.1% of the wealth distribution and mostly confined to 2022 and 2023. My results indicate that at most 100 individuals left due to the reforms. I find no evidence of significant outmigration or reduced inflows of startup founders or inventors. I estimate that absent any outmigration, wealth tax revenues would have increased by 75% from 2021 to 2024. Reform-driven outmigration lowers the revenue gain to 71.5%. My findings further show that outmigrating owners' firms remain economically active and do not reduce investment. In a broader set of analyses, I examine whether business outcomes are affected, regardless of whether owners outmigrate, since firms may reduce investment both due to liquidity constraints or distortions to owners' savings decisions. I compare firms owned by Norwegian individuals subject to the wealth tax with firms owned by foreigners and other tax-exempt entities. By merging historical ownership data from Orbis with the Norwegian shareholder register, I perform these analyses on both Norwegian and foreign-domiciled firms.
Across settings, I find no evidence that Norwegian-owned firms pay out more dividends or invest less after the reforms,…

Just thinking about these two stories next to each other: 1. In Darndale Park, a football club and a parkrun have been displaced by horses, and some locals have been asking for stables. Nothing yet. 2. In D2, the council is spending €7.5m on a new tearoom in Merrion Square, an area short of cafes?

What to do with the horses of Darndale?
Grazing in public parks means other uses are being pushed out, and adding momentum to calls for an equine centre and stable club to properly support horse culture in the area.
