The hyper-vigilance required in order to stay as safe as possible when cycling is not just for self-preservation purposes, it’s also because you have the pick up the mental slack on behalf of distracted or inattentive motorists, of which there are many.

Historic England outsourced their digital image provision to a third-party company. Then the company went bust and now all their images are inaccessible. Tell me again how outsourcing to the private sector is sustainable?

This is a refuge on a residential street. The guy leaning on his bike is at the primary school entrance, hence the green fencing beside him. The bollards are pencil shaped to say “KIDS HERE” the plastic bollards on the refuge have been flattened. There is no #WarOnDrivers there is a #WarOnWalkers

...and another who took issue at us riding in primary position through such pinch points to prevent such stupidity and wanted to get verbal from the security of their metal box. I damned near caught them as their attempt to speed off was hindered by traffic.

Out riding at the weekend, we had probably four close passes that I'd definitely have reported if filming, two drivers *astonished* that neither we nor the traffic islands in front of them simply disappeared by their force of will alone, one driver decided to just barge through anyway...

One of the hardest things about being a cyclist is dealing with the nagging feeling that a serious crash is inevitable. Because you can indeed do everything "right" and it still does not matter.
I followed every precaution and it didn’t matter

New to biking here

I started in July around the time of the fatal car crash with that biker. That and hearing everyone who bikes to work tell me that they have had horrid experiences with cars was disheartening.

I made sure to only use protected routes. I take Southwest corridor for basically my whole trip and even though it adds so much more time to my commute, it makes me feel safe.

None of that mattered because at some point, even for a second you will hit the main road. And you will always lose to the 4 ton machine. I got hit by a car parking in the bike lane. He was more concerned with his car than the fact that I could have my life potential altered forever because he was looking at his phone. And at the end of the day, the police can literally choose to not respond to your 911 call and you get stuck with medical bills.

It’s hard to have a conversation about sharing the road when people in cars feel entitled to do whatever they want and the only person who’s ever in danger is the biker. I love biking in this city and I have found a really love and joy for the outdoors because of it. Now I am terrified to even get on a bike lane, even if there is one, if it’s shared with the main road.

His main problem was the time it takes to get stuff built & the cost to do so. Didn’t give much weight to my view that when governments decide to do things, they really can deliver such mega projects, and quickly at that.

Discussed the whole solar / wind + battery with a friend on a long bike ride a couple of weeks ago. He’s 30 yrs at National Grid, and was of the opinion that we’ll need gas for standby, and the problem with that is we have to factor in stand-by pricing (TL;DR: we don’t & expect cake + eat it).

Horseshit hanging off opinions to ensure balance & both sides. To balance the anti‘s “I’ve a feeling this won’t work. Common sense, innit?”, the argument for lower speed limits was couched in “supporters claim”, rather than objective “supporters cite overwhelming, statistically valid data…”

Just saw someone zoom by on a Solar powered recumbent e-bike, clearly homemade. I barely got a photo before he was away. Just commuting to work in Chippenham I think? Legend.
Industrial estate with a small grainy cyclist turning the corner, laying back on a recumbent bike, and two flexible solar panels making a roof over the top.

Dodgy number plates are a red flag to a criminal mind. The UK really needs to do two things. Make use of them a serious criminal offence rather than the £100 now. Make prosecution easy and a priority through the existing #opsnap portals. It's currently too difficult. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
