This puts me in mind of that Python sketch where they're betting on who will be the next of their colleagues to jump off the roof. "Come on, Parkinson!" "Don't be stupid, man!"

They're not hilarious -- they're absurd. "Is this really as serious and meaningful as everyone thinks?" A man with his trousers down isn't particularly funny, but imagine if Hitler had been obliged to stand next to one while delivering his speeches.

People react with horror to the thought of women being forced to seek "back alley" abortions but not to trans people being forced to seek black market hormones and surgery even though the risks and the principle of bodily autonomy are the same in each case.

I was supposed to see my dude in October but he got COVID. I was gonna see him for Christmas but the relative who'd watch his kids got COVID. He was gonna drive here tonight finally but the new person who'd watch his kids? Just tested positive for COVID. Mask up. The pandemic is far from over.

Same! If an editor says "I suggest you make this change here" what they mean is "that bit doesn't work for me, as it is: please fix it", along with their idea of a fix. They're almost certainly right about it not working, but you're the author, it's your job to come up with a *better* fix.

A report from the ground that COVID is spreading rapidly in Gaza. Gaza is a public health crisis. We need a ceasefire now, and world leaders to stop denying that the pandemic is still going.

Almost everyone in my shelter is sick. We’ve been severely coughing & facing breathing difficulties, unable to go to a doctor as hospitals are already overwhelmed with victims.

Today a doctor in the house just told me it’s COVID, spreading rapidly in overcrowded areas. #Gaza

Normalize virus reports like weather reports. We appreciate weather reports even if they bring us bad news, as they help us plan ahead and avoid accidents. We need to stop being in denial about airborne viruses spreading. Sharing data helps us prepare and makes our lives easier.

Went to the Royal Academy today & discovered Interior by Armand Guillaumin featuring a statuette of the goddess Sekhmet perhaps dating from the reign of Amenhotep III c. 1390-1352 BCE, showing both the exoticisation of ancient Egypt & British colonialism (created during the the veiled protectorate)
An impressionist artwork showing a woman sat writing at a table which also holds a large statuette of the lion goddess Sekhmet

People who are disabled, chronically ill, higher risk etc. have every right to be angry about being abandoned by multiple governments. And they have every right to express that anger in whichever way they choose. Period. We should all humbly listen to them and act.

Re: Haley When we think of whiteness as ideology, we move beyond expectation that only those who think themselves white can be tempted by its affordances. I shared this on Twitter while ago—reply to student who asked how Jan 6 could be abt whiteness if there was smattering of non-whites there.
This is a great question. This is, I would argue, the power of whiteness. Whiteness as a construct is not merely about skin color, although those who think of themselves as white are most susceptible to its attractions. When I invoke the language of whiteness, I am interested in whiteness as an ideological force (connected to skin color for sure!), but an ideology that is powerful, in part, because of buy-in from those on the peripheries of whiteness. There have been, throughout the course of American history, people who don't fit neatly into the category we consider white who have locked arms with those who do who are committed to the ideology of whiteness. That fact does not undermine the argument that whiteness is a helluva drug that explains events like the jan 6 insurrection. To the contrary, it reminds us of how f'ing powerful whiteness is. It's so powerful, it is attractive to those it so often oppresses.

Most people here in Sydney don't wear a mask. They can't all be fuckheads. They've been told they don't need to worry about COVID any more, and the people around them aren't masked, so that proves it! Which doesn't detract from your central point. (We don't have mandatory air filtration, either.)

This (from Cory Doctorow) is the crux of the AI dilemma, that everyone in Silicon Valley wants you to ignore. What AI does well is cheap stuff like clickbait web copy. Minimal savings there. So who will actually pay for costly AI when investors stop subsidizing? locusmag.com/2023/12/comm...
Text from article: "In other words, an AI-supported radiologist should spend exactly the same amount of time considering your X-ray, and then see if the AI agrees with their judgment, and, if not, they should take a closer look. AI should make radiology more expensive, in order to make it more accurate.

But that’s not the AI business model. AI pitchmen are explicit on this score: The purpose of AI, the source of its value, is its capacity to increase productivity, which is to say, it should allow workers to do more, which will allow their bosses to fire some of them, or get each one to do more work in the same time, or both. The entire investor case for AI is “companies will buy our products so they can do more with less.” It’s not “business customers will buy our products so their products will cost more to make, but will be of higher quality.”"

I wonder if a good example of the authoritarian personality and its horror of "weakness" is the parade of alt-righters who can dish it out but not take it. They attack others' perceived softness, in denial about their own natural, human vulnerability.

If you’re going to be gathering with people over the holidays, you can potentially save your loved ones a lot of pain and grief by doing a rapid test first and staying away if you test positive or feel at all unwell. Missing out is no fun but being the cause of someone else’s illness would be worse!
