Being non-binary, my struggle with dysphoria ebbs&flows--I identify with some parts of my birth gender, but not the expectations. The last few years have been an experiment in drifting away from it to see when I feel unmoored; the edge of what I feel is comfortable in masculinity/femininity.

My gender dysphoria was very layered, and easier for me to dissociate from due to mental illness. My trans identity was NOT caused by mental illness--there is evidence of it from a very young age. I was mocked for wearing a tie to my first day of kindergarten.

Transness is not about mental illness, hormones, or surgery--though it is the most obvious expression of trans identity. Trans identity is the gift of autonomy over your gender. While transness is most easily identifiable through gender dysphoria, its heart is self-exploration and empowerment.
