I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

I've been covering the death penalty in depth for a dozen years now, and few nights have been as disturbing and dispiriting as tonight. This was a moral, ethical, and legal failure on several different fronts from many different actors. It wasn't *just* SCOTUS, though they sure were a key part.

After SCOTUS allowed Tennessee execution to go ahead, Tennessee botched the execution
SCOTUS, over the liberals’ dissent, cleared the way for Tennessee to kill Christa Pike. The alarming order from DC was followed by even more disturbing developments in Tennessee.

i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, “hey man that’s not funny” or “wow that’s fucked up” and there is no reward

Most would still chuckle. Then I'd ask if they'd be willing to use those terms about their loved ones. Awkward silence. Then we'd go through the data on how many men committed violent acts. And they would get looks of panic that they might be implicated.

When I taught at an all-boys prep school, we'd do an activity where I had them list every sexual term they could think of. They'd often laugh, as many were absurd things meant for Urban Dictionary. We'd then go through how many terms were violent (~85%) and how many were male-dominant (~90%).

I always wish we would make more time for those conversations. Most students agreed they shouldn't use that language. Most said that they would intervene if they saw something. But few would be willing to teach peers, to have hard conversations or challenge them. We need more bravery from men.

Put another way, to be legible enough for AI to be useful to most families, they would have to stop communicating as the family they have known, never had to overtly think about, and become something stranger and coarser that has no cultural foundation. Why would I do that?

Sigh. This is assuming that the action is shaping the language. The language is shaping the action. It cannot do a good job at doing what private dialects are actually doing — building social cohesion, communicating power relations, connecting events often in non-linear and hard to categorize ways.

But it also connotes lawlessness, exploitation of people and resources, even death.

Expertise can't be fully flowcharted. It's dynamic. The flowchart would never end, and as soon as you write it down the rules would change, the next case will bring new factors that would require a new sub-sub-sub-sub-subsection to particular parts of the flowchart. It's all harder than they think.

Like many of her neighbors, Ms. Vuittonet had been worried about the streams of new immigrants coming across the Rio Grande during the Biden administration and had trusted that Mr. Trump would stop them. Although some Trump supporters held signs calling for “mass deportations now” during the 2024 campaign, Ms. Vuittonet never thought such deportations would include people she knew who had lived in the United States for decades.

“I knew that he was going to start deporting people, but that he was going to go after bad criminals, like true hardcore criminals, rapists, killers,” Ms. Vuittonet said, sitting in the small coffee shop she runs from the back of an antique store. She thought of her six children, who range from ages 6 to 12. “Of course I want the streets safe.”

But when her brother was taken to an immigration detention center earlier this year, just days after a scheduled check-in with an immigration official, she said it felt like a punch to the gut
