Abolish frat culture
On “The Good Guy With the Text” fallacy
by Bess Kalb

“Raise the son who gets the Cornell ‘free pussy’ group text and calls the cops,” was a version of the viral post that took hold of all my algorithms yesterday.

Sure. Yes. Of course.

But. Bear with me when I say: This is a breathtaking fallacy. This is the “I’m With Her” liberal version of the good guy with a gun fantasy. And this is going to be uncomfortable for anyone with a kid in a fraternity to hear: If your son finds himself in a group that would send a “free pussy” text, it’s too late. The group is the disease, the text is the symptom.

If the imagined Hero Son in this scenario is receiving this text, written out, in writing, by one of his friends, he is part of the insidious chokehold of college rape culture. And he will be in the same position as all 57 men who got the message and did nothing. Not because they ultimately stayed silent after wrestling with the horror of this grotesque misogyny from one of their brothers. Because they thought it was fucking funny and were fucking stoked.

I wrote for @thecut.com about the Cornell case and what it says that, at my institution and many others like it, protesters are often punished more harshly than sexual assailants www.thecut.com/article/what...

As a professor at the Ivy League school, Kate Manne has known many, many victims. There’s a palpable feeling on campus, she writes, that this is big.

This is *the* piece. Kate Manne, professor of philosophy at Cornell, speaks truth to the totality of failures at the university — and why students protesting the war in Gaza have faced far harsher consequences than any of the Cornell 7: www.thecut.com/article/what...

The Kennedy Center has provided such an array of true riches to the DMV - from programs for school kids to a platform for local artists on the Millennium Stage to housing the opera and symphony and artists at the height of their powers.

In terms of respectful, perceptive, sensitive, detail-oriented men, I'm 3/3 lately in encounters with eyeglass fitters/optical sales associates.

Being left to one's devices - such a nice phrase, and in danger of being interpreted narrowly nowadays
