A great story from the Twiss Lab! Who knew that a little finding we had >10 yrs ago would turn lead to a beautiful example of intrinsic control during axon regeneration. An axon-intrinsic loop restricts nerve regeneration through axonal protein synthesis www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

An axon-intrinsic loop restricts nerve regeneration through axonal protein synthesis
Injured axons synthesize the RNA Binding Protein KHSRP that promotes mRNA decay and slows nerve regeneration. Axotomy-induced increase in axoplasmic Ca2+ activates axonal Khsrp translation, and while ...

Got reviews back on our lab's first (solo) manuscript. A little thread on our experience: Overall, I am grateful to the reviewers for their enthusiasm & truly constructive feedback. I will be honest as a #newPI, submitting this paper was more terrifying than submitting any grant.

🚨 New pre-print! If you are interested in new roles for SARM1, check this out. The lab did cool work showing macrophages need Sarm1 to efficiently respond to immunoogical stimuli and PNS injury. Cell specific sarm1 KO mice give surprising results- check it out! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

This #FluorescenceFriday we have adult DRG neurons cultured in microfluidics! Axons traveled through ~640um length microgrooves to the next compartment. Cyan is neurofilament. These were cultured/imaged by our super talented postbac, Jess. (who is looking for lab tech/grad positions in NJ/NY)

As a young girl in STEM summer camps I was constantly told I didn't belong. A high school guidance counselor told me to not apply to college because I wouldn't cut it. 20 years later I am running a lab & considered an expert in my field. Use those "you cants" as fuel to succeed. You CAN do it. 👩‍🔬

If you burn down a forest, you don't miss out on lumber for just that season. You have to replant all the trees, nurture them, and wait for them to grow. The science and research budget cuts happening now are wanton, senseless arson. Recovery, if it ever happens, will take generations.

There are 2 previous historical cases of countries destroying their science and universities, crippling them for decades: Lysenkoism in the USSR and Nazi Germany. The Trump administration will be the 3rd. It's not just budgets but research, institutions, expertise, and training the next generation.
Graphs showing 25 years of budgets for the National Institute of Health, NASA, and the NSF. In all cases, the proposed budget for next year is far, far below any year of the previous quarter century.

One of the best bits of wisdom I've gained in my academic career is when to just wait on things to resolve themselves, and not waste time, energy, and professional capital. This is a huge thing mentors can guide ECRs in (assuming the mentor isn't someone who just prefers to defend the status quo).
