This is super cool, congrats to you and Johanna! This is anecdotal, but Marina and I found that having an in-person session vs. online only for my diss study boosted follow-up retention from ~60% to ~80% (or something like this) in the student subject pool. It pays to engage with your participants!

Yes, we were mostly going after the chanterelles! We probably left work 2-3 full buckets in total. I’ll also share with them your identifications - only two in our group were experts, so most of us played it safe haha. You’re probably right about bolete. That was the other most common species there.

EU friends: pls be aware that you cannot share certain types of data on Zenodo because Zenodo does actually not comply with GDPR. @lakens.bsky.social 's blog has a great summary. It's a pretty serious reason to avoid Zenodo for researchers who work with data, if I understand the issue correctly.

Ok but seriously this is a huge pet peeve of mine. Who taught people this? Literally stats 101 in grad school includes how to report alpha (and run so many other data checks that are rarely used in practice). It’s just so lazy and ignorant.

Today is teadmistepäev in Estonia, which translates to "Day of Knowledge." Across the city, people were celebrating the first day of the new school year with lots of flowers, music, and other festivities. I am so grateful to be living in a country that celebrates education in this way.

Psychological Science special issue call 📣 Ever had your research denigrated bc it's "only descriptive", "what's the mechanism though?" and "but what are the theoretical implications?" Now has come your time to shine. Send your best descriptive work! www.psychologicalscience.org/publications...
Psychological Science invites submissions that advance psychological science through careful description of psychological phenomena. Psychological research often focuses on explaining and predicting phenomena before we have a sufficiently detailed understanding of them. It can be difficult to build strong theories on incomplete empirical foundations of the phenomena themselves. Careful descriptive research helps establish shared empirical reference points developed around well-characterized phenomena. As such, descriptive research contributes to psychological science both by improving our understanding of the phenomena themselves and by providing a stronger foundation for future theory-building, explanation, and prediction.

We are interested in manuscripts that:

Deepen our understanding of psychological phenomena, including what they look like, how they vary, and how they unfold;
Draw on a variety of sources of evidence and methods, including qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods approaches; research conducted in naturalistic settings; intensive, longitudinal, or small-sample designs; and open or large-scale datasets;
Provide necessary context for interpreting what is being described, including who is represented in the data, the settings and circumstances in which phenomena occur, and the broader social contexts in which they are situated; and/or
Make a substantive contribution to psychological science through the quality, depth, or significance of the description provided.
The deadline for submitting regular manuscripts is April 15, 2027. Registered Reports will also be considered. The deadline for submitting Stage 1 Registered Reports is November 15, 2026. Authors should indicate in the “Comments to Editor” box during submission that the manuscript is intended for the “Descriptive Research in Psychological Science” special issue.

I don't know if I've seen a Claude deck yet, but ChatGPT slides are awful and were all over APS earlier in the summer. Each slide is essentially a mini scientific poster. I recently saw a talk with clearly AI generated slides - not sure if the speech was AI but it didn't fully match the slides.

OSF was essentially a science Dropbox that contained all parts (code, data, prereg) in one place. I believe all the functions can be replaced, it’ll just be in different places which is a bit annoying. And what platforms to choose depends if you care about having a “permanent” version.

Kaitlyn M. Werner, PhD @kaitlynmwerner.bsky.social · 11/08/2026
I don’t think any individual component of OSF is indispensable. There are other pre print respositories, data management platforms, and even pre-reg sites. Its main advantage was the integration via projects.
