A gorgeous 22° halo around the sun today over Southwest Mountain vineyard in Virginia. Ice crystals bend and diffract the light, creating the colors, similar to a rainbow.
The sun is a white blob with a partial circle of red and blue around it. In the foreground are trees, grass, and grape vines.

And here is that painting earlier on - after the rain washed it all off the canvas leaving me to go back the next day and start again. It wasn't as wet the next day. #SpéirGhorm
Landscape format canvas with very pale watery marks of red and green and long diagonal streaks. No discernible picture of anything beyond - maybe - a presence of very pale red across the middle where the quay wall would be and, at a push, hints of the row of houses above it.

My #painting "The Long Walk II" was painted when me and my bicycle sat in Galway by Claddagh Quay. Rain then softly landed on my face. And made the painting look funky. Then it got much heavier and washed all the paint off the canvas. So I returned the next day and started over. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Landscape format in acrylics on canvas. View across rich blue rippling water to narrow band across the centre of the painting consisting of a street of about two dozen terraced houses, the leftmost being 4 stories and the rest a mixture of 2 and 3 stories high, above a band of dark blue that is a quay wall. Windows and doors are dark simple soft rectangles. Houses are single colours of, from left to right, blue, 5 white 2-story houses, blue, yellow, pale green, brown, white, maroon, red, pale green, white, blue, brown, yellow, blue, yellow, white, and yellow. Slated roofs are dark blue. Sky is stormy yellow mixed in with patches of green and red, dark in patches near the top, brightest at the bottom above the roofs. The water closest to the dark quay wall has less rippling and shows a dark shimmering reflection of the houses. Foreground includes some grass and flagstones of curved quayside on left. Three panel comic. Panel 1: underwater ocean camera view of a whale fall on the sea floor, with various bottom feeders and weird fishes crawling around the decomposing remains. Off panel, someone says, “hang on a second…” Panel 2: the speaker is a member of a marine biologist crew, remotely viewing the video footage from a computer monitor. The biologist is leaning against his colleague’s chair. He continues, “pan the camera back.” Panel 3: Back underwater, the POV shifts to the other end of the whale carcass. There’s a large spider crab with a standing just off to the side. It has a human face in a neutral expression, and is wearing glasses. The marine biologist says, “I think I went to high school with that guy.”

I don’t think I ever shared my AgustD MV-inspired minifigs. Daechwita, Haegeum, and Amygdala.
A photo of a bunch of Legos, including a cherry tree, a camera, an axlotl, a grumpy faced cat figurine, a white seal figurine, and three minifigs.

The minifig on the left has got peachy-tan legs, a white torso decorated to look like a wrap top of some sort, a grumpy face, and a conical straw hat. This is the Daechwita Yoongi.

The minifig in the middle has black legs with some purple ties that you should ignore, a black suit jacket over a white button-up torso, a grumpy face, and black slicked-back hair. This is the Haegeum corrupt police-officer/detective Yoongi.

The minifig on the right has black legs and a black torso with some gray rib-looking lines and a purple tie belt that you should ignore. He has a smiling, innocent face and is wearing a black motorcycle helmet. This is the Amygdala delivery-scooter Yoongi.

(The white with orange spots grumpy cat could also be Yoongi, it’s got that ㅅ mouth.)

Surprised Eel Historian, PhD @greenleejw.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Eels' slipperiness is the basis for the some of our oldest eel metaphors. In the 5th C. BCE, the Greek poet Simonides wrote that a slippery character -- say, like, a politician who is running for office to avoid prison -- is “like an eel down in the slime." And that's bad. 🗃️🧪
Meme. Colored medieval drawing of Simonides. You can tell it's him because his name is written above his head. Otherwise you might not know, because he is dressed very much like a medieval merchant. He is wearing a big maroon hat with a green band, and an orange cloak over a stylish black and yellow shirt. His yellow hair is long and flowing, and he is holding a book in his lap in his right hand. His face is lined with care or worry, and he is looking somewhere off to your left. He is not paying attention to you at all, really.

His thumb is holding his place in the middle of his book, and he looks like he's been interrupted in the middle of reading by some semi-distant disturbance. As if, somewhere off to your left, there is a bear trying to get onto a bus. The bear is apologetically looking for change to pay the fare, but everyone else is freaking out. Simonides is considering this scene, and writing a poem about it in his head.

Meme text reads:
"My best poetry
is eeligiac poetry"

Does it have to be ocean fish? Because paddlefish are freaks, more so because lake fish are supposed to be *normal*. I was camping one time in IIRC Oklahoma and there was an enormous dead one on the shore and everybody was like "nope, not swimming in that lake now, that ain't right."

You reach the Gates of Hades & find them guarded by this: (📷: USFWS)
Spooky Season has officially begun, and we’re kicking things off with a three-headed ferret.

OK, technically it’s three black-footed ferrets, but October calls for a little imagination.

Once thought to be extinct, black-footed ferrets are one of North America’s rarest mammals. At the National Black-footed Ferret Conservation Center, staff work to breed and recover these endangered little creatures and return them to the wild.

Cute? Absolutely. Three-headed monster? Only in October.

These victories were achieved through the efforts of Civil Rights activists, along with support from Neiman Marcus president Stanley Marcus, who was an early advocate for desegregation. The Neiman Marcus Dallas store manager purportedly warned Marcus that he would destroy his business this way.

Neiman Marcus closed its downtown Dallas flagship on Wednesday. The store played a notable role in the history of desegregation in Dallas. Previously, Black shoppers across the US could enter department stores, but they weren't allowed to try on clothes without adhering to certain conditions. 🧵
