The late 1870s to the 1880s were a major turning point in the career of Camille Pissarro and the other Impressionists. Here we can see his tendency toward pointillist techniques which would be further developed in the later 1880s under Seurat's influence.

tl;dr all political parties in (semi-)democracies face tradeoffs between moral commitments and political pragmatism, and between the preferences of activists and swing voters. It's normal. But worth watching out for selectivity in which issues are on/off the table for these tradeoffs

ahahaha the Controller's report on wrecking Sunset Dunes came in at $9.8M in capital costs plus $500K-$1.9M every year to maintain the road would be an unhinged use of money
RE: Proposition G – Allowing Private Vehicles on the Great Highway in Sunset Dunes Park
Dear Mr. Arntz,
Should the proposed Ordinance be approved by the voters and the roadway is open to private
vehicles, in my opinion, it would significantly increase the cost of government by approximately
$9.8 million in one-time capital costs and by approximately $500,000 to $1.9 million annually. The
cost of the proposed Ordinance, should it be approved by the voters, is dependent on decisions
that the Mayor and Board of Supervisors make through the budget process and operational
decisions made by departments, as an ordinance cannot bind future Mayors and Boards of
Supervisors to provide funding for this or any other purpose.

It's not like the old owner of CBS (Paramount), Shari Redstone, was a saint. But she had an incentive to maintain the audience, advertisers, and some semblance of journalistic reputation. As a _common owner_, Ellison has greater incentive to cozy up to the administration even if it kills CBS.

Wealth Concentration, Corruption, and Democratic Backsliding:
A Theory of Media and Common Ownership*
Jacob M. Grumbacht
July 15, 2026
Abstract
I develop a model of how extreme wealth concentration harms democracy through a common ownership problem. A media firm can extract rents by producing pro-regime content that curries favor with a corrupt or authoritarian leader, but this pro-regime content drives away audience and advertisers. However, a common owner, who controls both a media firm and other large firms, can use the media firm to extract rents and reduce regulatory exposure for her entire business portfolio, not just the media firm. The common owner thus has a greater incentive to use the media firm for pro-regime content, which reduces the profitability of the media firm but increases the profitability of the overall business portfolio. Concentrated wealth, which increases cross-holding, increases the total amount of pro-regime content in the system.
