Old thread, but I hadn't realized that it wasn't just Draknek disavowing Blow over this (though that was rad on its own). Rather, every single developer that Blow licensed a puzzle game from is in here co-signing.

the reason “AI will create so much abundance we will have a utopian society” rhetoric falls so flat is that the people building it will never, ever share their bounty unless it is taken from them and we all know it

Consumption of violence is a choice; it radicalizes. In a world that thrives on instantaneous gratification, we all know why folks spend their time watching videos that produce hateful "righteous" indignation rather than doing something productive like volunteering or even talking with a neighbor

i take this back, fully retract it, and i apologize for how i phrased this. i posted this while angry at the constant barrage of years of my life witnessing senseless murder in palestine, and this is no way to express my opinion, which is an end to all conflinct in the region. i’m sorry

I've just learned that Freeplay has removed me as a sponsor for Parallels due to an accusation from a speaker that I am a "zionist". Where did the speaker get this idea? Because Unpacking was included in a listicle in an online Jewish publication a few days ago. I didn't even know about the article.

i was fortunate enough to profile Margaret Hamilton in 2019. A really kind and curious person. This was my favorite story she told me:

Very sad to hear that Margaret Hamilton has passed away. Here's a short thread about her role in the Apollo mission, and her lesser-known work on the simulations that led to the discovery of Chaos Theory. 🧪 👩‍🔬 ⚛️

Honest question: how is this different from some unknown mathematician having a breakthrough?

I mean: if some reclusive Japanese genius had a breakthrough on your problem and published it, would you have felt the same?

And if not, why not?

If that had happened I would be overjoyed, maybe a hair chagrined that I didn't get it myself, but truly happy that someone got it and that I could go and talk to that person. Because it's the kind of problem I don't think would have fallen to a human after a few hours of thought, and I would have so much to talk about with that person. I would fly to Japan and hope to have tea with them, I would learn some Japanese to make the conversations easier. I would learn some interesting things hearing about their struggles and their false starts. I would make friends with that reclusive Japanese genius and my life would be far richer for it.

I will never meet that person and I will never hold a real conversation with the "creator" of that proof. They will never tell me how they came up with the cancelling exponential summation that cracked the constructio

I've been trying to articulate this in a way which doesn't sound judgmental, and apparently that sounds like a fortune cookie. But seriously, a question I ask a lot is "If I get used to this new system, what problems am I signing up for when I'm inevitably rug pulled?" and it's served me quite well

There are so many people, so many, that love film and want to dedicate their whole lives to making films, in front of the camera, behind it, in editing suites and casting rooms and makeup trailers. And that these locusts can come in and just devour the industry, take it from us all, is devastating.

I feel like we don’t talk about millennials in particular, hitting our 40s - in earlier generations many of us would be reaching the peak of our careers, but because of disaster after disaster, locust after locust eating our industries, many of us are on our 3rd or 4th fresh start.

There's a darkly funny bit in The Forge, one of the best chapters in Moby-Dick, where Ahab asks Perth if he could smooth the seams of his head, but in Sunset, years earlier, Ahab laments his steel skull. It's played as a joke, but it's part of his tragedy.

Oh, no! More horror movies! It's October, and that means it's time for my annual attempt to watch, rank, and maybe write a bit about a minimum of one seasonally appropriate movie each day for a month ...

99 years ago, The Jazz Singer effectively marked the end of silent movies. Today marks the end of Warner as a studio, and the beginning of it being a “boutique brand” offered by Skydance. Movie history is lost in the same way as Disney eating 20th Century Fox did.

Did you know that Cosmic Star Heroine and our later games were influenced by Dark Souls? It's probably not obvious, but it's in our ailment system. Instead of using chance-based ailment success rates, we use individual ailment HPs - if you deal enough ailment "damage," the ailment succeeds.
