mc escher is old news, have you seen shinjuku station maps
A neon wireframe of Shinjuku Station hangs in a black-violet void. Purple streets stretch toward the horizon above a white-and-cyan knot of platforms, tunnels, and intersecting passages. Corridors cross themselves, divide, and return at heights that no longer agree. The streets describe a flat city; the station beneath them describes something considerably larger. There are no solid walls, only the exposed edges of an interior that has escaped its building. In the upper-right corner, a small control panel offers checkboxes for floors 4F through B3, suggesting that the geometry might become possible again if enough of it were hidden.An English-labelled map of Shinjuku Station compresses an impossible building into a deceptively tidy arrangement of pastel platforms and passages. Parallel tracks resemble the rungs of several ladders laid through one another. Beige concourses bend around them, change elevation at tiny staircases, and emerge on the wrong side of their own walls. B7F lies near the top of the page; B1F spreads through several apparently unrelated interiors. Yellow labels repeatedly promise an exit: West Gate, Central West Gate, JR Central West Gate. Each belongs to a different understanding of west. A bright red ShinjukuStation.com logo presides over the diagram with the confidence of a place that has never had to leave itself.An intricate blue-ink drawing unfolds Shinjuku Station into an impossible architectural dissection. Orange, lavender, pale-blue, green, and pink passages weave between banks of railway platforms, diving beneath streets and resurfacing inside structures that should be outside the station. Stairways stitch together overlapping planes. Buildings stand along the edges of the cutaway, but the deeper the drawing goes, the less certain it becomes which space contains which. Tiny Japanese annotations patiently catalogue the contradiction. A smaller explanatory diagram occupies the lower-left corner, offering another station inside the drawing of the station. The white paper between the corridors could be daylight, solid ground, or further rooms.An exploded diagram of Shibuya Station arranges disconnected floors in white space like an Escher staircase equipped with public amenities. Platforms and concourses hover above one another, linked by dense flights of stairs, sloping escalators, and blue elevator shafts. The labels descend from 3F to B5F, although height appears to be negotiated separately in each part of the image. Several places claim to be B1F. Patches labelled “ground level” occur partway through the machinery. Red accessible routes trace a meticulous course through the impossible structure, passing toilets, ticket machines, and numbered exits. The legend at the bottom explains every symbol except how to get outside.

Our new paper: Ouros, our processor for lazy functional languages. Its pipeline hides latency to overcome inherent sequentiality of graph reduction, through dataflow-driven execution and automatic multi-threading. It's up to 118% faster than our earlier KappaMutor processor. doi.org/10.1109/ASAP...

On sunday, I was visited by this tiny jumping spider (finger for scale) 😍 I didn't even know we had jumping spiders in Germany ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Even without the random moving (was offered a PostDoc in my hometown that I wanted to move back to after my PhD), I still left academia. Now I have stable working hours, actual holiday, twice the pay and I don't have to deal with the song and dance of where to publish with whom for max prestige.

Haskell can call into C code without blocking main thread (meaning that the C FFI plays nice with green threads because it can be preempted) and without the user having to manually manage a thread pool or similar. It's handled completely transparently for the user by the language and runtime

I was baffled when I learned that the english version of #FantasyRealms does not underline card names in the color of their suit like the german version does. it is way harder to tell if a given card works for the hand you're building or not. But this is nothing a few fineliners can't fix:
Serval cards from the game Fantasy Realms. If a card mentions another card by name, the name is underlined in the color of its suit. For example, the Hydra gives bonus points for the Swamp, which is a Floor card, so the name "Swamp" is underlined in dark blue

fixed your headline
A hit song on the Billboard 100 charts is termed *$k$-good* if it is _ever_ in a weekly top-$k$, and *$k$-immediate* if it _debuts_ in the top-$k$.

An artist is *$(n,k)$-Olivian* if their $n$ first $k$-good hits are all also $k$-immediate.

*Headline 1.* Olivia Rodrigo is the first $(10,10)$-Olivian woman.

Equal work deserves equal pay. 3 years ago, the EU agreed that payment of all employees should be clearly indicated, so that men and women receive the same. Now, EU countries are bringing these new rules into national law.
A split-screen graphic comparing job advertisements before and after EU pay transparency rules. On the left, labeled “Before,” a job ad displays the vague phrase “Competitive Salary” with a red X underneath, suggesting a lack of transparency. On the right, labeled “Now,” the job ad includes a clear salary range of “€2,000–€2,500 gross monthly” with a green check mark, indicating the new requirement to provide pay information upfront. An EU flag appears in the bottom-right corner, linking the change to EU legislation.

Disney Animation remade three songs for ASL. For these, we resurrected the original data and pipeline version, reanimated (from near scratch in some places), relit where needed, and re-rendered. Probably the hardest way to do this, but definitely the right way to do it, so that's what we did!

Went from knowing nothing about NixOS to contributing to it in 20 days! I don't know of many other Linux distros that'd allow that. Feels really reminiscent of Bevy's approach to FOSS: make the average user capable of contributing on onboarding, then provide a shallow on-ramp.

This argument never made sense to me. If someone is willing to wait several years for a PC version of a Sony game, they would never buy a PS5 in the first place. I certainly won't, but got several Sony games on Steam Most will just wait until emulation is good and pirate the game or not play at all

Probably the stupidest way to approach advent of code day 1 in #Haskell, but I just love knot-tying too much
Screenshot of the following Haskell code:

data Elem a = MkElem
  { left :: Elem a,
    x :: a,
    right :: Elem a
  }

value :: Elem a -> a
value y = y.x

mkRing :: Int -> Elem Int
mkRing size = start
  where
    (start, final) = go final 0
    go prev !n =
      let x = MkElem prev n (if n == size - 1 then start else next)
          (next, end) = go x (n + 1)
       in (x, if n == size - 1 then x else end)

left :: Int -> Elem a -> Elem a
left 0 x = x
left n x = left (n - 1) x.left

right :: Int -> Elem a -> Elem a
right 0 x = x
right n x = right (n - 1) x.right

ring :: Elem Int
ring = right 50 $ mkRing 100
