Very disappointing news coming from Brussels today as the @ec.europa.eu approves a new German subsidy scheme worth up to €35bn, most of which is expected to go to fossil gas plants and crowd out batteries and storage. Our reaction is below. COM press release here: ec.europa.eu/commission/p...
Our Senior Campaigner Alexandru Mustata says “In designing these auctions, Germany has thrown away the rule-book when it comes to EU State Aid rules regarding technology neutrality. By turning a blind eye to this rule-breaking, the Commission is failing to protect German households and businesses from the fossil gas industry.”

“Six months after the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and ensuing energy crisis, Germany is locking in reliance on subsidised gas plants. The German economy will remain strapped into the fossil-fuel rollercoaster for longer and Germans will be punished with price shocks and hefty electricity bills.

“Europeans have been suffering through a summer heavily marked by the climate crisis, which is being accelerated by our dependence on fossil fuels. The Commission should listen to the legal concerns raised by German businesses and civil society, and ensure that public money benefits the energy transition instead of putting unreliable fossil fuel giants in the fast lane for subsidy hand outs.”

Ireland's electricity capacity mechanism funds fossil fuel infrastructure, works against climate action and in favour of large energy users such as data centres. It is coming up for its 10-year renewal, so this is a key moment to intervene Learn more at electricityactionireland.wordpress.com

To achieve this, it needs to: 1️⃣ Give national regulators a statutory mandate for the energy transition. 2️⃣ Create independent system operators and planners (ISOPs) to oversee grid planning in the public 🧵1/5
