A simple infographic showing a grayish, sparse-haired Mixotoxodon and a more tan, slightly hairier Toxodon against a solid background, with a human silhouette for scale. Each animal has a graphic besides it showing an estimated range, and its scientific name below it.

Today's four random pieces of palaeoart: Arthur Lobus' Velociraptor and Protoceratops, Dmitry Bogdanov's Capitosaurus, Petr Modlitba's Tanystropheus, and John Bindon's Orodromeus!
A lightly feathered Velociraptor with a orange/red feathers grapples with a bright green Protoceratops, clinging to its back even as the ceratopsian bites its arm. The scene is recreated in fossil form as the famous Fighting Dinosaurs hovers above, like a ghostly omen.A, grey-green, thick-bodied Capitosaurus, an alligator-shaped amphibian, lurches along with short, muscular limbs. Its back has a prominent ridge starting at the base of the neck that stretches down the tail. The sides are splotched with brown speckles and splotches and have a subtle yellowish tint.A pair of slick-skinned Tanystropheus beside a calm sea. One strides over the rocks, as if preparing to fish. The other rests with its tail in the water, its long neck stretched high into the air as it peers back toward the ocean.A scaly, blue-headed Orodromeus bounds over a mossy log. Its back is lined with a fibrous ridge and its throat sports a turkey-like wattle.

13mya in Colombia, the top predator wasn't a big cat or a bear. Probably Purussaurus, a caiman relative bigger than a bus. Bite marks found on the skulls & bones of massive hoofed mammals. South America was short on large mammal predators, so a crocodile filled the gap. #HowToBuildAGiant

Today’s four random pieces of palaeoart: Luis Rey’s Deinonychus, Doreen Edwards’ Allosaurus, Charles Knight’s Mammuthus, and William Scheele’s Eusthenopteron!
A Deinonychus with grey and black streaked feathers charges at the viewer, arms spread and foot poised to deliver a kick. Its head is partially covered in a red, wattled skin.A green Allosaurus with a yellow, snake-like belly and long, dragging tail stands in a forest clearing. A diverse array of leafy foliage sprouts up around it, and several trees with chocolate brown trunks close the scene behind. A herd of mammoths with fur of mixed brown shades march across a snowy landscape, emerging from a conifer forest. The herd contains mammoths of several sizes and ages, including a tiny calf.A blue-scaled Eurhenopteron hauls itself onto a rocky shore, curving its thick body into a sinuous curve as it strains with its fleshy fins.

Giant ancestors of modern-day kangaroos — which previous research has estimated could weigh up to 250 kilograms — may have been able to hop in short bursts, according to research published in Scientific Reports: spklr.io/633258xjaX #Palaeontology 🧪

Biomechanical limits of hopping in the hindlimbs of giant extinct kangaroos - Scientific Reports
The locomotor abilities of animals depend upon their body size. Today, kangaroos are the largest hopping mammals, but some of their Pleistocene relatives were larger still—more than twice as heavy as any modern kangaroo. So, is there an upper size limit of bipedal hopping? Previous analyses have recovered an upper limit of ~ 140–160 kg based on allometry, but have suggested that incorporating changes in hindlimb scaling patterns among giant species would alter these conclusions. Here, we test this proposal by integrating scaling data from modern kangaroos with direct observation of the hindlimb bones of giant fossil kangaroos. We test two potential limiting factors on hopping—bone strength, and tendon size. We find that (a) the metatarsals of giant kangaroos would be capable of resisting the bending moments involved in hopping, and (b), the calcanea (heel bones) of giant kangaroos could accommodate tendons large enough to resist the loads generated during hopping. While hopping may not have been their primary mode of locomotion, our findings suggest that it may have formed part of a broader locomotor repertoire, for example for short bursts of speed.

Jaw extends much further than the skull, although the skull has procumbant canine teeth that are about a third of it's total lengthSame skeleton is recognizable in a dark recess, next to a standing rhino skeleton. The Green Waterhole Cave Simosthenurus occidentalis specimen - an extinct 'short-faced kangaroo' - housed at the South Australian Museum. The specimen has been photographed and digitally articulated and posed to try to reconstruct the animal. These kangaroos have large, heavy, short heads. Long arms with four-fingered hands, of which the index and middle fingers are very long with exceptionally long claws. Very short back legs for a kangaroo, with rather short feet with only one giant toe ending in a hoof-like claw.

They are very mysterious, with analyses and trackways suggesting they may have walked on two legs instead of hopped. If only they had stayed alive for another 50,000 years we could have asked them.
