I submitted my letter of support for the Sternberg Museum to the Kansas Board of Regents. Let's hope it helps
TEXT: Closing the Sternberg Museum of Natural History
Dear Kansas Board of Regents,
My name is Anthony Maltese, a former Kansas resident from 1990-2004, University of Kansas
graduate, and professional paleontologist specializing in the sea life of ancient Kansas. It has been
recently disclosed that Fort Hays State University intends to close the Sternberg Museum of Natural
History, with likely serious consequences to both its staff and collections. I cannot think of a more
disastrous and short-sighted response to a budget shortfall. Over the past three decades of my
career, I have worked closely with the Sternberg Museum excavating fossils with staff, using the
museum for research, leading field trips for students and professionals, and making replicas of
specimens that educate museum visitors worldwide. The collections housed at the museum are an
irreplaceable record of the history, both modern and ancient, of Kansas and are unique in that they
are housed in the area where they were excavated from.
The collections are so important that I have helped donate many scientifically significant specimens to
the museum, understanding this places them in the public trust for perpetuity. Budget decisions are
difficult; however, the destruction of this extremely valuable institution is not a reasonable solution.
While I no longer reside in Kansas, I think about the Sternberg Museum on a nearly daily basis and
use its holdings to advance our understanding of what came before us. Destroying this vast resource
is absolutely the wrong thing to do to address these problems. Keep the Sternberg Museum.

IMO, there's still a huge disconnect between how the public perceives natural history museums and the prestige surrounding them, and the actual economics of sustaining them.

Lonely Wanderer of the South Taniwhasaurus antarcticus, a tylosaurine mosasaur, browsing within the cold seas of Antarctica, 73 million years ago.

Remains of this particular mosasaur have been found in New Zealand, Japan, and more interestingly, in Antarctica. Although known mostly for its freezing temperatures and its penguin inhabitants, Antarctica has a rich fossil history, dating as far back as the Triassic. And up until 34 million years ago, there were forests and, later on in the Cretaceous, flowers before ice sheets arrived. Yet despite the lack of ice sheets, it is likely Antarctica would've had polar conditions during the late Cretaceous as a result of the continent being further down south from the Equator. This indicates that despite being reptiles and being close relatives of snakes and lizards, it is likely that mosasaurs like Taniwhasaurus were warm-blooded animals that were able to cope with freezing ocean temperatures, as evidenced by remains being found in Arctic and Antarctic regions, as well as chemical isotopes found in their teeth.

For this lone Taniwhasaurus, she at least has her warm blood to help her keep going in the cold, yet ice-free seas of the South.

Doli’s Blue World Dolichorhynchops mother and calf, along with a school of Apsopelix and a pair of Clioscaphites in the background. All of which are residents of the Western Interior Seaway, 85 million years ago. #Paleoart #sciart #art
The illustration depicts a mother Dolichorhynchops and her offspring swimming within the Nursery of what will one day become the farmlands of Kansas. Dolichorhynchops was a plesiosaur, a type of marine reptile whose remains were found in marine rock deposits dated to around 85 million years ago, during the age of dinosaurs. Along with the marine reptiles in the background, there's a huge school of extinct fish, Apsopelix, as well as two ammonites in the top-left corner, named Clioscaphites.

A complete specimen of a very close relative of Dolichorhynchops, named Polycotylus, which is currently on display at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles, includes the remains of a preserved baby inside. This supports the idea that, despite being called reptiles, plesiosaurs gave live birth, and the fact that there's only one baby within the Polycotylus specimen indicates that plesiosaurs would've engaged in dedicated parental care. For the Dolichorhynchops pair, real families stick together, even in a dangerous sea that divided America.

When Life Gives You Lemons, Make Lemonnieri. An illustration of Mosasaurus lemonnieri and Hoploscaphites, taking place in the shallow seas of Maastrichtian Belgium. #Paleoart #sciart #Mosasaur

Mosasaurus lemonnieri was a close relative to the more famous Mosasaurus hoffmanni, as both obviously belong to the same genus. Though at one point, it was brought up that M. lemonnieri represented a juvenile growth stage for M. hoffmanni (Mulder et al, 2004). Current evidence that supports the distinction between the two include the teeth of M.hoffmanni being more robust, as well as the lower jaw or dentary of M. lemonnieri having 16 teeth, whereas those M. hoffmanni contain 14. Consequently, because of how poorly understood M. lemonnieri is in comparison to its more famous relatives, it is uncertain on whether the supposed different traits are conclusive as such or if they represent different ontongentic growth stages, and that is despite M. lemonnieri consisting of multiple individuals with different growth stages. As of now, M. lemonnieri is a valid species and I'm hopeful there will be more papers to come out of this well preserved, yet illusive beast.Mosasaurus lemonnieri up close with Hoploscaphites
