The University of Exeter has confirmed that it won’t proceed with compulsory redundancies “at this time”. This means colleagues do not need to complete the pro forma, and there will be no selection process.

Just watched Nolan's Odyssey (many, many thoughts), but the musical note that rings out when Od. plucks the bow string at the beginning and at the end, foreshadowing the simile in Od.21 (..."a note like a swallow's") was music to my eyes, and a finely Homeric ring composition move

A brief appreciation thread for some of my colleagues in Classics at Exeter, who the University of Exeter have put at risk of redundancy @exeter.ac.uk. A few are on here, most are not, but I'm going to say nice things about them anyway.

"After all, what is a university? Clearly not the students; they pass through like mayflies [...]. Academic staff? They too are ephemeral, and a drain on our income streams. Our buildings are... award-winning, and we need more of them, but we also need to be ready to float free of ties"

What's happening at the University of Exeter is a disaster for both the region and the country. The way the sector is set up, it is *inevitable* and *unstoppable* that this will continuously happen everywhere. We need to stop, get out a blank sheet of paper and start again.

All famines are man-made, all famines are political. Historians of empire and humanitarianism have known this forever. Gaza is not starving, Gaza is being starved, by Israel, and this starvation is enabled by our government and by every other government that does not step in to force food and aid.

Im sorry to hear of the loss of Fred Ahl today. A lion in the field of Roman literature, he as also a devoted teacher of undergraduates both in Latin and in translation. My own work in Latin lit was impacted at the early age of 18 by his teaching, in particular my love of Seneca.

Hello! My new article is now out in Arethusa: '(Re)Producing The Egyptian: Arboricultural Cultivation Of The Roman State In Lucan’s Civil War'. I consider the epic's tree imagery as metaphor for the Roman state, pointing to the protagonists' attempts at cultivation & propagation.
Screenshot. Text reads: (Re)Producing The Egyptian: Arboricultural Cultivation Of The Roman State In Lucan’s Civil War. Esther Meijer. Abstract: This article examines the changing relationship between Rome and Egypt in Lucan’s Civil War. It applies philological and ideological analyses to the epic’s destabilisation and restabilisation of the body politic of the Roman state as discernible from two interrelated sets of imagery: firstly, the language of arboriculture and propagation as evoked by Virgil’s Georgics and Theocritus’s 17th Idyll; and, secondly, the mortuary treatments applied to Pompey’s body parts. Key to the restabilisation of the res publica is Caesar’s interpretation of Pompey’s remains, which reproduces Egypt as “Other” in relation to Rome while acknowledging its now enduring presence within the empire.
